When asked whether he attended the school as a child, M. recalls that his father equated learning Japanese at the school with learning Japanese nationalism (as did many mainstream politicians and citizens of the day), and so refused to let M. attend. And H. recounts Sato's receipt of the "Emperor's medal, the 'Order of the Rising Sun'." Sato countered the charges with his assertion that he was teaching his students to be "good Canadian citizens" (NC 15 April 1939:2).
