Lee gives Kev another feature victory KEV Bryant doesn’t usually train for anyone but himself. But when his long-time partner Rose came to him some months ago with a request from a work friend, Kev agreed. “Rose works with Delphine the partner of Warren Ellis and they were keen to get me to train a bitch for them,” said Kev. The bitch had already raced three times in Brisbane. “I decided to give her a go. Warren and Delphine had paid $8000 for her as a pup,” said Kev. When the bitch, named Keona Lee, arrived at Kev’s Tiaro property he knew straight away she would need time. “She was funny with other dogs,” said Kev. “I put her in a paddock with some pups I had that were 14 months old and she wouldn’t go near them.” But within a week, Keona Lee had come out of her shell. “She’s now the boss of the kennel.” When Keona Lee started racing, Kev was devastated. “From her first 11 starts, she was in trouble 11 times, and none of it was her fault,” he said. Her victory in an owners and trainers association bonus maiden series had to be seen to be believed. Kev still gets out the tape and watches it over and over just to convince himself she won. “She was knocked down early, then through the catching pen and she was 20 lengths from the leader but got up to win by a length and a half,” he said. “I know it was only a maiden in Bundaberg, but she was a maiden too, and she won.” Keona Lee had to have six weeks off racing a little while after with a back foot injury. “She came back a much better greyhound.” So much so that Keona Lee recently won a 550m Young Guns at her home track in impressive style. Kev Bryant and Keona Lee. “She’s looking for 600 metres and I may even suggest to Warren and Delphine that she come to Brisbane to be trained so she can get plenty of races over the longer distance,” said Kev. While Kev Bryant is reluctant to train for anyone, he now makes an exception for Warren and Delphine. “They are good owners and love coming from Hervey Bay to watch her race. It is unbelievable to think the closure of a racetrack could be the catalyst for a bright future. The decision of the Queensland government to take back the Gold Coast greyhound track may well is a stroke of luck. In using the land where the track has been established initial reports from surveyors and project managers indicate the government will save infrastructure costs for transport of about $300 million as compared to other potential sites. However, therein lies a problem. Dealing with governments and bureaucrats is never easy or timely. T he date set down for the closure of the Gold Coast track is September 1. This is only six months away and the concept plan developed by the GRAQ for the site of the new track has been sitting with the government for a decision for a number of weeks. Even when the concept is accepted and an agreed compensation amount is reached it is expected that development of the site will take approximately two years. There are a number of alternatives being considered. Amongst these is the temporary transfer of meetings from the Gold Coast to Ipswich and Albion Park. This creates problems because both venues are often used for alternate purposes such as trotting and show society. Another is the temporary opening of the old Beenleigh track. It has also been put forward by Capalaba Secretary Manager Bernie Culey that Capalaba would be available if the GRAQ would arrange SKY connection. This is a good idea as there are a number of dogs racing at the Coast, which will not be suited to Albion Park, Ipswich or Beenleigh but will handle Capalaba without a problem. Straight track racing may be well received by TAB punters as it is new and there is usually reduced interference. Turnover would also increase if meetings were conducted with 10-dog races. The size of First Four, quadrellas and trifectas in particular would have to increase. This may even win back the punters, who concentrate on horse racing because of the bigger pools. The decision on the new Logan track cannot come quick enough. Once the government agrees on compensation, development should start immediately. It is then imperative the GRAQ make the necessary steps to move the Albion Park track and the GRAQ administrative office to the same site. The savings to the industry will ensure its future. The continuation of a greyhound track at Albion Park is not in the best interests of the future of greyhound racing. We have never been treated as an equal partner at Albion Park and I seriously doubt we ever will be. During the EI virus greyhound meetings were lost at Albion Park until procedures could be put in place. This would not have occurred if we had our own venue. We can believe all the hype that EI has been beaten but there is every chance there will be a breakout again. This is but one reason why Albion Park should be sold for residential development and the trots should go into partnership with the Doomben racecourse, which is just down the road. Trialling in early mornings has never been allowed and the best time for public exposure, Saturday nights has always been the privilege of the trots. There is a disadvantage to northern suburbs trainers as the relocation of Albion Park will mean more travel but the financial advantages to be gained would secure the future of this industry. The decision cannot come quickly enough for an impatient industry. BRISBANE businessman Dale Cartwright has signed on as a major sponsor of the Brisbane Club at Albion Park. The Cartwright Property Group will sponsor 50 races at Albion Park in the next year, with its major role being backers of the Albion Park Gold Cup the premier Group 1 staying event in this state. Cartwright is an unabashed greyhound racing fan. “I was in greyhounds as a youngster 20 years ago when living in Melbourne,” he said. He helped Melbourne trainer Brian Newman at the time and one night at Olympic Park led out four winners. He drifted out of the industry soon after and got into real estate, eventually moving to Queensland. “Three years ago I went to Parklands and decided I wanted to get back into dogs,” he said. “I’d just turned 40. He was introduced to the late john young who was to guide Dale into the welcoming hands of Richie Wisener. “Richie has become my unofficial greyhound racing manager,” said Dale. “He has been finding some high quality pups to buy and guiding me in the right direction at every move.” Dale’s youngster Supreme Level (Black Enforcer-Bogie Leigh) recently made his race debut with a sensational 25.76 win at the Gold Coast (above). A dozen of Dale’s staff were trackside for the race and 20 more Dale comes on board back at the office watching on Sky Channel. He has since bought a Spiral Nikita-Paua To Burn bitch, a Bond-Bogie Leigh bitch and a Black Enforcer-Nice Portrait bitch all puppies and destined to be the basis of Dale’s future breeding program. “I’ve got a five-year plan to win a Group 1 race,” he said. He and Richie have spent a year negotiating the purchase of a pup from Paua To Burn. In the meantime Dale is also getting some of his clients involved in the industry. “The Black Enforcer-Nice Portrait pup is syndicated between me, a solicitor, a CEO, my accountant and one of my staff,” he said. Brisbane Club general manager Luke Gatehouse welcomed Dale and his company on board at Albion Park. “The future for greyhound racing is on the threshold of great things and we are glad Dale and his company are coming along for what we believe will be a great and successful ride,” said Gatehouse.
