BUSINESS PROFILE Bank on us Specialist construction company Johnson Bros (Oldham) is looking to diversify into the rail sector by cashing in on its 30 years’ experience and expertise in bank security installations Despite the continuing squeeze on public spending and the recessionhit business climate, funding for rail refurbishment projects continues to offer opportunities for businesses looking to diversify into new areas. Approximately £35bn has been earmarked for work on railway infrastructure over Control Period 4 (CP4) from 2009-2014 plus an additional £15bn is being invested in Crossrail, and overall rail construction is set to rise by 55 per cent in the next three years, according to the Construction Products Association (CPA). While major refurbishment projects such as Kings Cross and Birmingham New Street may grab the headlines, across the UK there are numerous smaller-scale station refurbishment projects scheduled or underway that provide opportunities for enterprising firms in the construction sector. With this sector continuing to struggle – overall, construction output fell by 5.2 per cent in the second quarter of 2012 – rail is encouraging the sort of SME activity that the government is very keen to see. Johnson Bros (Oldham) is one such specialist construction company. Established in 1965, Johnson Bros has built a reputation for high quality workmanship and customer service within the building, joinery and property maintenance industry. Its speciality, though, is security work, with its customers including household names such as Royal Bank of Scotland, Nat West, Lloyds TSB, North West Water, plus local authorities and nationwide property management firms. It manufactures and installs security doors and frames to client specifications, and its unique security glazing – made from a tough polymer that is 250-times stronger than glass – is an effective anti-attack system with a track record of foiling would-be bank robbers.
