keita, salif<br />

Known as <strong>the</strong> ‘golden voice of Africa’, Salif Keita is an Afro-pop singer-songwriter from Mali. His<br />

West African music is combined with influences from Europe and <strong>the</strong> Americas. In 1977 Keita<br />

received a National Order Award from Guianese President Sékou Touré. His music is very popular<br />

in <strong>the</strong> Francophone world, and more broadly in Europe.<br />

SENEGAL<br />

n’dour, youssou<br />

Youssou N’dour is a world famous Senegalese composer, singer, percussionist and UNICEF Goodwill<br />

Ambassador. In 2005, N’Dour received a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary World Music<br />

Album for ‘Egypt’. As a cultural icon in Senegal, he is actively involved in social and political issues<br />

and is building his own television and radio stations to promote social issues and give Senegalese<br />

people a better access to home grown arts.<br />

Amla is a South African cricketer. In 2004 he became <strong>the</strong> first South African team player of Indian<br />

descent. As a devout Muslim, he has actively campaigned to remove all alcohol-promoting logos<br />

from merchandise and playing gear.<br />

Zain Bhika is a South African singer-songwriter and pioneer performer of nasheed songs. He is<br />

known for his collaborative efforts with o<strong>the</strong>r prominent Muslim entertainers including Yusuf<br />

Islam and Dawud Warnsby Ali. Bhika also writes and directs plays written specifically for schools.<br />

Ryhaan Shah is considered among <strong>the</strong> best contemporary writers in Guyana and <strong>the</strong> Caribbean,<br />

best known for her 2005 novel A Silent Life. Shah is also an active public figure as <strong>the</strong> president of<br />

<strong>the</strong> Guyanese Indian Heritage Association.<br />

qasimov, alim<br />

Alim Qasimov is an Azerbaijani musician and one of <strong>most</strong> recognized singers of <strong>Islamic</strong>-folk<br />

music in <strong>the</strong> world. In 1999, he was awarded <strong>the</strong> prestigious International IMC-UNESCO Music<br />

Prize. Qasimov has recorded nine albums, and performed in many concerts around <strong>the</strong> world.<br />

CHINA<br />

chengzhi, zhang<br />

Zhang Chengzhi is considered by many to be <strong>the</strong> <strong>most</strong> <strong>influential</strong> contemporary Muslim writer<br />

in China. His historical narrative History of <strong>the</strong> Soul, about <strong>the</strong> rise of <strong>the</strong> Jahriyya Sufi Tariqah in<br />

China’s northwest, was <strong>the</strong> second-<strong>most</strong> popular book in China in 1994.<br />
