IdahoPTV Flips Channels in August
Idaho Public Television’s Main Channel (subchannel 1)
steps up to broadcasting in high definition late Monday, August
8, at approximately 11:55 p.m. MT/PT. At the same time,
the former over-the-air HD Channel (subchannel 2) begins
broadcasting in standard definition widescreen.
The Main Channel will continue to carry the familiar mix of
PBS prime time and children’s programming, plus IdahoPTV
productions, specials and favorite series, such as the British
comedies on Saturday nights.
“We are committed to continually improve the quality of
our Idaho Public Television service,” General Manager Peter
W. Morrill says. “Our long-term digital plan always envisioned
that our primary channel would broadcast over-the-air in high
definition. Improved technology, new equipment and a wider
selection of HD programming has allowed us to make the
change now, as we approach our 10-year anniversary of digital
broadcasting.”
Over-the-air viewers will see the greatest change. Subscribers
to cable and satellite basic services will see little change. (The
Main Channel may also be offered in high definition on cable or
satellite as an added service.)
The over-the-air subchannel 2 will be renamed IdahoPTV
Plus Channel and will feature a mix of programming that
surrounds a different theme each night during prime time hours.
Look for:
• History and biography on Sunday.
• Idaho/Northwest and exploration on Monday.
• Science on Tuesday.
• Drama and mystery on Wednesday.
• British comedy on Thursday.
• Nature on Friday.
• Music and performance on Saturday.
The two additional over-the-air channels — Learn/Create and
World — will see no change. Learn/Create (subchannel 3) offers
a combination of formal educational programming and lifelong
learning shows, which includes how-to series about cooking and
crafting. World (subchannel 4) features news, public affairs and
documentary programs. Learn/Create and World also broadcast
floor action from the Idaho House of Representatives and Senate
when the Legislature is in session, as well as some legislative
hearings.
The opportunity to upgrade our statewide broadcast
service is the result of a generous grant from the M.J. Murdoch
Charitable Trust grant and the now defunded U.S. Department
of Commerce Public Telecommunications Facilities Program
(PTFP).
Variety Happens
After Midnight
With telecourses on summer
vacation, weekend overnights show more
variety and offer an opportunity to record
encores of shows you might have missed.
THE CIVIL WAR completes its
overnight run on Saturdays — 1:00 a.m.
/12:00 midnight MT/PT — concluding
July 16. Beginning July 23, another
Ken Burns epic, THE WAR, tells the
story of World War II from the point
of view of U.S. participants from
different geographical and economic
backgrounds. The hometowns
themselves are part of the story as the
war transforms parts of the country
in different ways.
Other specials coming to the
early Saturday hours in July include
GIANT SCREEN FILMS, beginning
July 9 with Bears and
continuing with Majestic White Horses,
Ocean Oasis, Wolves and Mystic India.
On July 16, the six-part miniseries, THE
STORY OF INDIA begins and continues
into August.
The early hours of Sundays continue
to feature LIFE ON MARS at 4:00/3:00
a.m. MT/PT, the adventures of a modern
police detective, who suddenly finds
himself at work in 1973 without many of
the technological tools he is used to relying
on. The series continues into August. At
5:00/4:00 a.m. MT/PT, the hour features
music throughout July. The San Francisco
