Poirot, Miss Marple, Zen
Share the Spotlight in July
Airs Sundays at 9:00 p.m. MT/PT
See it in HD at 10:00/9:00 p.m. MT/PT
Three fictional detectives — Agatha Christie
characters Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple and
brooding Italian newcomer Aurelio Zen — are the
central figures during five Sunday-evening episodes
this month.
The mysteries unfold beginning with Hallowe’en
Party (July 3), the third and final episode of the
most recent whodunit series starring
David Suchet as suave Belgian
super sleuth Poirot. During a
village’s Hallowe’en party, a
young girl boasts of having
witnessed a murder from
years before. No one
believes her tale until
her body is found later in the
evening, drowned in the applebobbing
bucket.
Poirot joins forces
with his old crony,
mystery novelist
Ariadne
Oliver (Zoë
Wanamaker),
in an attempt
to solve the
apparent murder.
Oliver often
assists Poirot in
his cases through
her knowledge
of the criminal
mind. She often
claims to be
endowed with
particular
“feminine
intuition,”
but it
usually leads her astray. She is particularly fond of
apples, which becomes part of the plot.
In The Pale Horse (July 10), Julia McKenzie
is back as Jane Marple, the detective with a gentle
smile and probing mind. Following in the footsteps
of Gracie Fields, Margaret Rutherford, Angela
Lansbury, Helen Hayes and Joan Hickson, McEwan
plays the part of the elderly amateur sleuth with the
extraordinary knack of solving crimes.
In this episode Miss Marple’s old friend is found
murdered, and when she receives a list of names
sent by the victim before his death, she sets out to
find the killer and seek justice.
In the final three Sundays of July, Idaho Public
Television debuts the suave Zen beginning with
Vendetta (July 17). Rufus Sewell stars as Zen, a
Roman police detective hailing from Venice, where
his moniker is a local shortening of the name Zeno.
Outwitting prosecutors, politicians, mobsters,
kidnappers and killers, Zen brings justice to
modern-day Italy, whether the authorities want it or
not. This Zen series features a trio of cases based on
the bestselling novels by Michael Dibdin, a British
crime novelist who lived in Seattle for several years
until his death in 2007.
Separated from his wife and living with his
mother (Catherine Spaak), Zen is too frazzled by his
job to think about romance. That is, until he meets
Tania Moretti, his chief’s new secretary played
by Italian actress Caterina Murino. Tania herself
has been having spouse trouble and sees Zen as
a remarkable exception to the predatory Romeos
around the police station. Indeed, Zen has more than
a bit of Bond about him, being both a gentleman
and an exceptional lover.
Beginning with Vendetta on July 22,
MASTERPIECE MYSTERY! will repeat the
previous Sunday’s episode Fridays at 9:00 p.m.
MT/PT. Cabal (July 24, repeats July 29) and
Ratking (July 31, repeats August 5) are the
other two Zen episodes.
This film offers a record
of Western ranch life
on July 5. It is a
filmed portrait of
a world in which
nature and culture,
animals and humans
are on intimate terms
— and sometimes
violently at odds. The
film follows some of
the West’s last modernday
horsemen, who lead
flocks of sheep into the
scenic and often dangerous
mountains of Montana’s
rugged Absaroka-Beartooth
range north of Yellowstone
National Park to fatten them
on sweet summer grass.
The film presents a portrait
of the American West
where traditional ways are
threatened in a world of
harsh beauty and arduous
labor, and humans still
work in rugged intimacy
with nature.
Airs Tuesdays at 10:00 p.m. MT/PT
See it in HD at 8:00/7:00 p.m. and 11:00/10:00 p.m. MT/PT
The documentary series with a “point of view” continues its 24th season this month with four new shows
as filmmakers travel to Montana, Southeast Asia, South America and Africa to tell their stories.
Sweetgrass
Enemies of
the People
Airing on July 12, this film follows Thet Sambath, an investigative
journalist who lost his family during the slaughter of nearly 2
million people at the hands of the Khmer Rouge in the late 1970s.
He spends a decade gaining the trust of men and women who
perpetrated the massacres of the “killing fields” of Cambodia,
which have remained largely unexplained — until now. Sambath
and co-director Rob Lemkin record shocking testimony from
the common foot soldiers who slit throats, and from Communist
leader Pol Pot’s notorious right-hand man. The result is a riveting
account of modern horror wrapped in the beautiful imagery of
rural Cambodia. Enemies of the People has won more than 20
awards, including a special Sundance Jury Prize.
Biblioburro:
The Donkey Library (July 19) follows
39-year-old Luis Soriano and his traveling library. Soriano is
surely the most famous resident of La Gloria, a small
town in a rural area of northern
Colombia plagued
by poverty, crime and
armed insurrection. But
his fame has little to
do with guns, drugs or
politics. His reputation
rests on two sturdy
donkeys named Alfa and
Beto, his own two feet,
and his willingness to
spend weekends tramping
through rugged and
dangerous backcountry
to bring a circulating
library of donated books
to the children in some of
Colombia’s poorest and most
remote towns and villages.
Mugabe
and the
White
African
This documentary, which airs July 26,
is the chilling account of one white African
family’s efforts to fight its government. The Campbell family of
Zimbabwe may have been white people determined to hold on to
their farm, but they are not in the mold of colonialists hanging on
to land extorted from blacks. They were among the native-born
whites who did not flee in 1980 when Zimbabwe achieved full
independence and black majority rule under independence fighter
Robert Mugabe. Embracing the new country, the Campbells
expand their small farm that same year, buying additional land
to create a game preserve, with the full approval of Mugabe.
Twenty years later, however, the Campbells find themselves in
the crosshairs of a brutal land redistribution program enacted by
the same Robert Mugabe.
SKY ISLAND
Airs Sunday, July 10, at 7:30 p.m. MT/PT
In northern New Mexico, the volcanic
Jemez Mountains rise more than a mile
above the high desert — a SKY ISLAND
surrounded by a desert sea.
Environmental filmmaker John
Grabowska (CROWN OF THE
CONTINENT, RIBBON OF SAND)
tells the story of these mountains with
few words but many images of the
varied ecosystems. From the bottom of
White Rock Canyon to the heights of the
Jemez, the land rises more than a mile in
elevation, creating different zones of life
as temperature drops and moisture climbs.
This unique formation encompasses the
canyons and plateaus of Bandelier National
Monument. The lush high mountain valley
is an ancient caldera. Signs of human
habitation are visible on Pajarito Plateau
and the Jemez Range — the ancestral home
sacred to Pueblo people for more than a
millennium.
Grabowska has said he makes films that
interpret natural landscapes and humans’
places within them. In the mountains’
isolated climate zones, the Earth’s warming
temperatures and a reduced snowpack
have an immediate effect on vegetation
and wildlife; pinyons and junipers are
disappearing to be replaced by grasslands
and unique animal life, which is threatened
in these isolated mountains.
This exploration of identity, place and
perception features narration by Academy
Award-winning actress Meryl Streep and
readings by Pulitzer Prize-winning Native
American author N. Scott Momaday.
Momaday spent his boyhood living in
Jemez Pueblo and for many years had a
home up in the Jemez.
Long-time collaborator and
cinematographer Steve Ruth captures
dramatic images of the mountains and
their wild inhabitants. Composer Todd
Boekelheide, who has scored other
Grabowska films, provides the original
orchestral music.
The Jemez Mountains are considered the
epicenter of climate change effects in New
Mexico. The film’s narration concludes:
“Parks and protected areas can be living
laboratories for studying long-term changes
in the landscape. Abundant and extensive
wildlands can help alleviate the effects
of a warming planet by absorbing carbon
dioxide. And they serve as an angle of
repose. Places for the pursuit of happiness.”
In Idaho’s forests, mountains and lakes
— even cities — Idahoans are turning their
energies to Working for Wildlife.
“Let’s face it. We humans are not easy on
wild animals. So it’s nice to know there are
folks out there who go out of their way to
assist wildlife, in interesting and challenging
ways,” says Bruce Reichert, executive
producer for this new show. “I was particularly
impressed with the role of volunteers in all
this, from giving a hand up to orphaned black
bear cubs to helping track the interaction
between wolverines and snowmobilers in
central Idaho.”
Biologists and volunteers load up sleds
and equipment in Island Park for a chance
to capture deer on the run. They call it “deer
tackling.” Helicopters help gather deer. Nets
are strung in a funnel pattern and held by
slender sticks that collapse easily. When a
fawn connects with the net, a waiting volunteer
tackles the animal by hand (arm and body) so
it can be weighed, checked and fitted with a
radio collar.
Wolverines, elusive 30-pound creatures with
an attitude, are not captured by hand. In the
Payette National Forest, tiny log cabins with
bait, a satellite message system, GPS units and
dozens of snowmobilers are all part of a multiyear
study under way to determine the animal’s
tolerance for winter recreationists. Volunteer
Ben Rooney describes his first encounter with
a wolverine: “You can hear this growling; it’s
super deep, doesn’t sound like an animal.”
Kim Heinemeyer, lead scientist for the
Central Idaho Wolverine Project, checks the
traps by computer every morning. Satellite
band boxes sit on the traps and notify her by
email if the lid has closed. She and others
then travel to the site to find out if they have
a wolverine or some other creature in the trap.
If the prize is a wolverine, they anesthetize
it and fit it with a radio collar. Meanwhile,
snowmobilers, who accept a GPS unit to carry
on their machines, are helping to build a winter
recreation map to juxtapose with the travels of
wolverines.
“Do we have wolverines overlapping where
there’s recreation? We’re starting to get those
answers — yes, we do,” Heinemeyer says.
At a home in Garden City, adjacent to
Boise, Sally Maughan of Idaho Black Bear
Rehab cares for orphaned baby bears. Because
the bears go back to the forest, there is no
socialization with humans after they are
weaned. “We go in, we feed, we clean, we get
out,” says Maughan. “They don’t see me as
mom but they accept me as kind of a funny
looking bear.”
IdahoPTV Flips Channels in August
Idaho Public Television’s Main Channel (subchannel 1)
steps up to broadcasting in high definition late Monday, August
8, at approximately 11:55 p.m. MT/PT. At the same time,
the former over-the-air HD Channel (subchannel 2) begins
broadcasting in standard definition widescreen.
The Main Channel will continue to carry the familiar mix of
PBS prime time and children’s programming, plus IdahoPTV
productions, specials and favorite series, such as the British
comedies on Saturday nights.
“We are committed to continually improve the quality of
our Idaho Public Television service,” General Manager Peter
W. Morrill says. “Our long-term digital plan always envisioned
that our primary channel would broadcast over-the-air in high
definition. Improved technology, new equipment and a wider
selection of HD programming has allowed us to make the
change now, as we approach our 10-year anniversary of digital
broadcasting.”
Over-the-air viewers will see the greatest change. Subscribers
to cable and satellite basic services will see little change. (The
Main Channel may also be offered in high definition on cable or
satellite as an added service.)
The over-the-air subchannel 2 will be renamed IdahoPTV
Plus Channel and will feature a mix of programming that
surrounds a different theme each night during prime time hours.
Look for:
• History and biography on Sunday.
• Idaho/Northwest and exploration on Monday.
• Science on Tuesday.
• Drama and mystery on Wednesday.
• British comedy on Thursday.
• Nature on Friday.
• Music and performance on Saturday.
The two additional over-the-air channels — Learn/Create and
World — will see no change. Learn/Create (subchannel 3) offers
a combination of formal educational programming and lifelong
learning shows, which includes how-to series about cooking and
crafting. World (subchannel 4) features news, public affairs and
documentary programs. Learn/Create and World also broadcast
floor action from the Idaho House of Representatives and Senate
when the Legislature is in session, as well as some legislative
hearings.
The opportunity to upgrade our statewide broadcast
service is the result of a generous grant from the M.J. Murdoch
Charitable Trust grant and the now defunded U.S. Department
of Commerce Public Telecommunications Facilities Program
(PTFP).
Variety Happens
After Midnight
With telecourses on summer
vacation, weekend overnights show more
variety and offer an opportunity to record
encores of shows you might have missed.
THE CIVIL WAR completes its
overnight run on Saturdays — 1:00 a.m.
/12:00 midnight MT/PT — concluding
July 16. Beginning July 23, another
Ken Burns epic, THE WAR, tells the
story of World War II from the point
of view of U.S. participants from
different geographical and economic
backgrounds. The hometowns
themselves are part of the story as the
war transforms parts of the country
in different ways.
Other specials coming to the
early Saturday hours in July include
GIANT SCREEN FILMS, beginning
July 9 with Bears and
continuing with Majestic White Horses,
Ocean Oasis, Wolves and Mystic India.
On July 16, the six-part miniseries, THE
STORY OF INDIA begins and continues
into August.
The early hours of Sundays continue
to feature LIFE ON MARS at 4:00/3:00
a.m. MT/PT, the adventures of a modern
police detective, who suddenly finds
himself at work in 1973 without many of
the technological tools he is used to relying
on. The series continues into August. At
5:00/4:00 a.m. MT/PT, the hour features
music throughout July. The San Francisco
Online Schedules Page
Is More Than Grids
Find a wealth of program information through the Schedules
page of the IdahoPTV website (idahoptv.org).
Click on “Schedules” in the menu bar above the Home Page
banner to get to the four-channel grid for Idaho, HD, Learn/Create
and World channels. (Also get there by clicking on the crosshatch
icon beside any channel under “Now on IdahoPTV.”)
The four-channel grid can
show in the grid to see a program description, times, dates and
in the rose-colored square is a link to the program’s website.
But there is more
On a menu bar above the grid (below the banner) are several
more options. Click on “Idaho,” “HD,” “Learn/Create” or
“World” to bring up a page with time, title and description for
shows on that channel. This too can be manipulated for Mountain
or Pacific time, and Prime Time, Full Day or Current.
Also on the Schedule menu bar is “Alpha.” This is a master
alphabetical list of programs within the dates listed at the top
of the page. Choose a series or individual show of interest and
click to learn when and on which channels it airs within the listed
timeframe.
Back to the menu bar, “DVS” is a list of all shows within
a month that provide descriptive video service for the visually
impaired. “Overnight” is a list of shows that air in the Overnight
Learning Block, 1:00 a.m./12:00 midnight MT/PT to 6:00/5:00
a.m. MT/PT. “Learn Cable” is a link to programming for cable
education channels in Moscow, Lewiston and Boise. “Report
Captioning for the hearing-impaired.
SURVIVAL:
Airs Mondays, July 4 and 11, at 10:00 p.m. MT/PT
The final two episodes of this four-part
series look at some of the continuing inequities
in the worldwide efforts to save lives that are
unnecessarily being lost. While new vaccines
are being rolled out and access to health care
is becoming a political priority across the
developing world, there are still stories like the
two this month.
The Plant That Cures Malaria (Uganda)
(July 4) Malaria kills Ugandan farmer Clovis’
young daughter. He learns too late that, if
caught early, a three-day course of drugs can
cure the disease. The drug’s main ingredient
is an expensive chemical extracted from the
Artemisia plant. Clovis discovers he can easily
grow Artemisia on his land and invests much
of his family’s resources into farming the plant.
He establishes a community of small
farmers who can produce enough Artemisia to
sell it in bulk to a processing company. A new
LIVES IN
THE BALANCE
company policy, however, may stand in the
way of income for this cooperative of farmers.
Fit for Life (Bangladesh) (July 11) A
young girl in rural Bangladesh goes into labor
in her family’s house. But she isn’t being
whisked away to a hospital to give birth. She’s
going to have her baby at home. A woman
known as a “dhai” is at the girl’s side. The dhai
has no medical training, yet she has delivered
most of the children in this village. Her tools
are a razor blade and a string to tie off the
umbilical cord.
In a different Bangladesh village, another
young woman gives birth in a clinic with
the aid of trained medical professionals. A
health specialist has coached her through her
pregnancy and will visit the family during the
first weeks of the baby’s infancy. This child
and her mother stand a much better chance of
surviving birth and the first year of life. This
film examines the whys and wherefores behind
these two situations.
History Detectives Saddles Up in Idaho
Airs Tuesdays at 8:00 p.m. MT/PT
See it in HD at 6:00/5:00 p.m. MT/PT
When HISTORY DETECTIVES began its ninth season
earlier this summer, Terry Garber, a Phoenix real estate
investor and artifacts collector, was glued to his television
for the first show. That’s because the nearly 100-year old
rodeo saddle he owns was a featured item on the investigative
program’s season premiere which re-airs in August.
Fairly certain that the beat-up saddle once belonged to
rodeo star and Hollywood actor Yakima Canutt, Garber
contacted HISTORY DETECTIVES to see if the show’s
producers might be interested in verifying his claim.
From there, the story unfolds with plenty of Idaho angles,
beginning with Garber’s Gem State roots. Born in Caldwell,
he was raised in Southern California but maintains his Idaho
connections, visiting family and friends in the Gem State and
staying at a family home in McCall each summer. Among
those friends is Tom Sweet of Weiser.
“I collect Western artifacts, items such as spurs, chaps and
saddles,” says Garber. “Tom told me about this old saddle
supposedly owned by Yakima Canutt that was hanging in a
local bar. After I bought the saddle about four or five years
ago and started checking things out, I thought there was a
good chance it was probably his. I really enjoy HISTORY
DETECTIVES, so I decided to get in touch with them.”
After he contacted the show’s producers, Garber eventually
hooked up with “detective” Wes Cowan, who took on the
assignment of finding out if the saddle did indeed belong to
Canutt, a saddle bronc rider and bulldogger who won allaround
cowboy honors at the Pendleton Round-Up in 1917,
1919, 1920 and 1923 and took his rodeo skills to Hollywood
where he starred in silent westerns.
Cowan’s search took him to, among other places, Post
Falls, where he consulted Bob Hickman, owner of Hickman
Saddlery and distant relative of Canutt’s. “Bob helped us look
into the possibility that the saddle belonged to Canutt,” says
Garber. Cowan’s investigation also took him and his crew
to the Hamley & Co.saddle shop in Pendleton, Ore., where
Garber believes the saddle was manufactured.
With the help of Hickman, Hamley staffers, and others,
Cowan reached the conclusion that Garber’s saddle was made
by Hamley in 1917. But did it belong to Yakima Canutt?
Well, we’re not going to tell you because the HISTORY
DETECTIVES episode with Garber’s saddle is scheduled to
air again in August, and we don’t want to spoil the surprise
for those who still don’t know.
In addition, HISTORY
DETECTIVES continues its
ninth season with segments that
commemorate the United States’
entry into two of its most storied
and deadly conflicts — the 150th
anniversary of the start of the Civil
War and the 70th anniversary of
the attack on Pearl Harbor, which
pulled America into World War II.
In the July 5 episode, Cowan
examines a pike — a sharp,
spear-like weapon that
preceded the bayonet —
that may have been used
by abolitionist John
Brown in his ill-fated
raid on the federal
armory in Harpers
Ferry, West Virginia.
Will Rogers and
American Politics
Airs Monday, July 18, at 10:00 p.m. MT/PT
He is a cowboy, comedian, humorist,
social commentator, vaudeville performer
and actor — and one of the best-known
celebrities of his day. This documentary
reveals how Oklahoma native Will Rogers
emerges as one of the most powerful voices
in the United States and charts his impact on
American politics through
archival film footage, photos
and documents, and various
interviews.
In the 1930s the
United States is mired in
the Great Depression and
teetering on the brink
of a second world war.
To help offset their
collective anxiety,
millions of Americans
turn to a rope-twirling,
plain-talking Cherokee cowboy
for clarity, comfort and common sense.
His plainspoken musings — such as,
“A fool and his money are soon elected” —
influence the political landscape then and
still resonate today.
Known as Oklahoma’s favorite son,
Rogers is born to a prominent Cherokee
Nation family in Indian Territory. He travels
around the world three times, makes 71
movies, writes more than 4,000 nationally
syndicated newspaper columns, and becomes
a world-famous figure. By the mid-1930s,
Rogers is adored by the American people
for his commentaries on the political scene
of the day.
Those who are interviewed to comment
on Rogers’ powers of persuasion include
Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day
O’Connor, actor Mickey Rooney, Cherokee
Chief Chad Smith, comedian Lewis Black,
former Oklahoma Gov. George Nigh, and
others. Bill Kurtis, former CBS news
Eighty-six years after the disappearance of
In 1925 Fawcett set out to find what he believed
