SKY ISLAND Airs Sunday, July 10, at 7:30 p.m. MT/PT In northern New Mexico, the volcanic Jemez Mountains rise more than a mile above the high desert — a SKY ISLAND surrounded by a desert sea. Environmental filmmaker John Grabowska (CROWN OF THE CONTINENT, RIBBON OF SAND) tells the story of these mountains with few words but many images of the varied ecosystems. From the bottom of White Rock Canyon to the heights of the Jemez, the land rises more than a mile in elevation, creating different zones of life as temperature drops and moisture climbs. This unique formation encompasses the canyons and plateaus of Bandelier National Monument. The lush high mountain valley is an ancient caldera. Signs of human habitation are visible on Pajarito Plateau and the Jemez Range — the ancestral home sacred to Pueblo people for more than a millennium. Grabowska has said he makes films that interpret natural landscapes and humans’ places within them. In the mountains’ isolated climate zones, the Earth’s warming temperatures and a reduced snowpack have an immediate effect on vegetation and wildlife; pinyons and junipers are disappearing to be replaced by grasslands and unique animal life, which is threatened in these isolated mountains. This exploration of identity, place and perception features narration by Academy Award-winning actress Meryl Streep and readings by Pulitzer Prize-winning Native American author N. Scott Momaday. Momaday spent his boyhood living in Jemez Pueblo and for many years had a home up in the Jemez. Long-time collaborator and cinematographer Steve Ruth captures dramatic images of the mountains and their wild inhabitants. Composer Todd Boekelheide, who has scored other Grabowska films, provides the original orchestral music. The Jemez Mountains are considered the epicenter of climate change effects in New Mexico. The film’s narration concludes: “Parks and protected areas can be living laboratories for studying long-term changes in the landscape. Abundant and extensive wildlands can help alleviate the effects of a warming planet by absorbing carbon dioxide. And they serve as an angle of repose. Places for the pursuit of happiness.” Idaho Public Television is the presenting station of SKY ISLAND and other Grabowska films to PBS. We humans are not easy on wild animals. So it’s nice to know there are folks out there who go out of their way to assist wildlife, in interesting and challenging ways,” says Bruce Reichert, executive producer for this new show. “I was particularly impressed with the role of volunteers in all this, from giving a hand up to orphaned black bear cubs to helping track the interaction between wolverines and snowmobilers in central Idaho.” Biologists and volunteers load up sleds and equipment in Island Park for a chance to capture deer on the run. They call it “deer tackling.” Helicopters help gather deer. Nets are strung in a funnel pattern and held by slender sticks that collapse easily. When a fawn connects with the net, a waiting volunteer tackles the animal by hand (arm and body) so it can be weighed, checked and fitted with a radio collar. Wolverines, elusive 30-pound creatures with an attitude, are not captured by hand. In the Payette National Forest, tiny log cabins with bait, a satellite message system, GPS units and dozens of snowmobilers are all part of a multiyear study under way to determine the animal’s tolerance for winter recreationists. Volunteer Ben Rooney describes his first encounter with a wolverine: “You can hear this growling; it’s super deep, doesn’t sound like an animal.” Kim Heinemeyer, lead scientist for the Central Idaho Wolverine Project, checks the traps by computer every morning. Satellite band boxes sit on the traps and notify her by email if the lid has closed. She and others then travel to the site to find out if they have a wolverine or some other creature in the trap. If the prize is a wolverine, they anesthetize it and fit it with a radio collar. Meanwhile, snowmobilers, who accept a GPS unit to carry on their machines, are helping to build a winter recreation map to juxtapose with the travels of wolverines. “Do we have wolverines overlapping where there’s recreation? We’re starting to get those answers — yes, we do,” Heinemeyer says. At a home in Garden City, adjacent to Boise, Sally Maughan of Idaho Black Bear Rehab cares for orphaned baby bears.
