Poirot, Miss Marple, Zen Share the Spotlight in July Airs Sundays at 9:00 p.m. MT/PT See it in HD at 10:00/9:00 p.m. MT/PT Three fictional detectives — Agatha Christie characters Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple and brooding Italian newcomer Aurelio Zen — are the central figures during five Sunday-evening episodes this month. The mysteries unfold beginning with Hallowe’en Party (July 3), the third and final episode of the most recent whodunit series starring David Suchet as suave Belgian super sleuth Poirot. During a village’s Hallowe’en party, a young girl boasts of having witnessed a murder from years before. No one believes her tale until her body is found later in the evening, drowned in the applebobbing bucket. Poirot joins forces with his old crony, mystery novelist Ariadne Oliver (Zoë Wanamaker), in an attempt to solve the apparent murder. Oliver often assists Poirot in his cases through her knowledge of the criminal mind. She often claims to be endowed with particular “feminine intuition,” but it usually leads her astray. She is particularly fond of apples, which becomes part of the plot. In The Pale Horse (July 10), Julia McKenzie is back as Jane Marple, the detective with a gentle smile and probing mind. Following in the footsteps of Gracie Fields, Margaret Rutherford, Angela Lansbury, Helen Hayes and Joan Hickson, McEwan plays the part of the elderly amateur sleuth with the extraordinary knack of solving crimes. In this episode Miss Marple’s old friend is found murdered, and when she receives a list of names sent by the victim before his death, she sets out to find the killer and seek justice. In the final three Sundays of July, Idaho Public Television debuts the suave Zen beginning with Vendetta (July 17). Rufus Sewell stars as Zen, a Roman police detective hailing from Venice, where his moniker is a local shortening of the name Zeno. Outwitting prosecutors, politicians, mobsters, kidnappers and killers, Zen brings justice to modern-day Italy, whether the authorities want it or not. This Zen series features a trio of cases based on the bestselling novels by Michael Dibdin, a British crime novelist who lived in Seattle for several years until his death in 2007. Separated from his wife and living with his mother (Catherine Spaak), Zen is too frazzled by his job to think about romance. That is, until he meets Tania Moretti, his chief’s new secretary played by Italian actress Caterina Murino. Tania herself has been having spouse trouble and sees Zen as a remarkable exception to the predatory Romeos around the police station. Indeed, Zen has more than a bit of Bond about him, being both a gentleman and an exceptional lover. Beginning with Vendetta on July 22, MASTERPIECE MYSTERY! will repeat the previous Sunday’s episode Fridays at 9:00 p.m. MT/PT.
