Northeast Ohio Quality Improvement Collaborative by Marianne Lorini from the arha In 2007, the Akron Regional Hospital Association and the Ohio Hospital Association worked together to create the Northeast Ohio Quality Improvement Collaborative. All hospitals in Northeast Ohio were invited to participate. Currently there are 34 hospitals that are part of this collaborative. This is a voluntary project that brings together, in a non-competitive setting, hospital chief executive officers, hospital quality management professionals and hospital medical directors. OHA has worked on similar projects in Dayton, Cincinnati and Columbus. Over the past eight years the Ohio Hospital Association has been able to work with Dayton hospitals to achieve important improvements in the quality of care. Because of this work, the number of deaths for patients with acute myocardial infarction (heart attack) decreased in Dayton. Dayton hospitals won the 2002 Ernest Codman Award, a national honor, for their efforts. Over the past couple of years, OHA has also been working with the hospitals in the Cincinnati and Columbus areas with the goal of achieving similar results, and is now pleased to work with the Northeast Ohio area hospitals in the same manner. There are three committees which meet on a regular basis regarding this health quality improvement collaborative. The Steering Committee consists of quality improvement personnel from each of the participating hospitals and is responsible for data analysis and validating the data. The Medical Directors Committee is comprised of Chiefs of Staff, Medical Directors and Vice Presidents of Medical Affairs and is responsible for the design, executive and evaluation of the project’s various quality improvement initiates. The Medical Directors have recently chosen the issue of Congestive Heart Failure as their first focus area. The Quality Council is made up of CEOs and vice presidents of Medical Affairs from hospitals participating in the project, and serves as the governing board. They provide oversight and leadership and serve as the “stewards” of the initiative. The Ohio Hospital Association is planning to hold a meeting in Columbus this summer where all of Ohio’s regional quality improvement collaboratives will share regional best practices and successes that each has had to date.
