Affiliation. That was the buzzword throughout the greater Akron/Canton medical community,
as 2007 came to a close. Akron General Health System formed an affiliation with
Cleveland Clinic; Medina General Hospital, with University Hospitals; and Summa Health
System, with WRH Health System and Robinson Memorial Hospital. In addition, Summa
acquired Barberton Citizens Hospital, bringing its total number of hospital affiliations and
acquisitions (which includes Akron City Hospital, St. Thomas Hospital and Cuyahoga Falls
General) to six.
These affiliations and acquisitions were expected and, most would agree, necessary — especially
in the light of continuously increasing costs and decreasing reimbursements. Most hope
the new partnerships will improve operational efficiencies for all concerned. Other benefits,
such as enhanced healthcare services, new research collaborations, assistance with physician
recruitment, and expanded opportunities for staff education, are anticipated, as well.
Anticipation. Hopeful anticipation. That may well be the buzz word/phrase for 2008. May
we all anticipate a healthier, happier and more prosperous new year.
