Carbonised remains of : u, h, fruits of Sapindus emarginatus (Rectha); c. cndocarp pieces of Emblica
officina/is (AnwaJa); d. seeds of Acacia mgala (Shikakai): and c. pod pieces of Shikakai from Prc.Harappan
Culture (en 2,750- 2.500 B.C.) at Banawali. Haryana.
Anatomical investigations of 12 wood charcoal samples from Lumbini, district
Taulihava, Nepal, a site of Buddhist period dating between ca. 600 to 200 B.C., were carried
out. Majority of the wood remains have been found to belong to Shorea robuSla, thereby
revealing the selective choice of the ancient settlers for this quality limber available locally
in the Tarai and Bhabhar region. n,e other timbers exploited by them belong to the mixed
deciduous forest associated with Sal, ViI., Termillalia lomelliosa, Adilla cordi/alia, Garde­
Ilia IlIrgia, Dalbergia sp. and members of Anacardiaceae, Mimosaceae, Apocynaceae,
Magnoliaceae, Meliaceae and Bombacaceae. The specific identifications are in progress.
