Methodology
• Research reports and other documents relevant to this report were reviewed and applied
as a context for the data analysis.
• This report is based on statistical data supplied by the Ministry of Education. The two
Pouwhakataki based in Hastings and Napier were largely responsible for gathering the
data from a range of sources. These included Group Mäori, Schools Monitoring and Support,
Data Management and Analysis Division of the Ministry, MOE Regional Offices, Census
New Zealand, Statistics New Zealand and Te Puni Kökiri. Other information was obtained
directly from schools, providers and other relevant community links in the Ngäti Kahungunu
rohe.
• The data was then collated and analysed, and as much as possible contextualised by the
author with reference to the research literature.
• Inevitably comparisons between Mäori and non-Mäori have been made, but the intention
was to describe the educational characteristics of Ngäti Kahungunu regardless of their
standing alongside other populations.
• A draft report was prepared and this was tabled at a consultative meeting for comment
with the Pouwhakataki and a member of the NKII Mätauranga Board.
• After ammendments were made the final report was completed for presentation to the
MOE.
• Dissemination of information will be a process agreed upon by the NKII Mätauranga Board.
