You grow a whole different connection - as you would with family or friends." ~Mentored youth Children & Youth Institute: 4-H Youth - Mentoring Journey 4-H Youth Mentoring—Journey 4-H Youth Mentoring matches court-involved youth ages 8-18 with caring adult mentors in an effort to reduce the frequency and severity of delinquent behavior. One-on-one, community based matches meet at least two hours each week, participating in activities like fishing, rock-climbing, geocaching, and much more. As a growing program, Journey 4-H continued to expand its reach in 2011. » Facilitated 35 hours of structured, skill building activities for mentors and youth. Provided an additional 50 hours of independent activity opportunities for matches. » Recruited 30 potential volunteers, 8 of which were male. » Engaged 1 new match (youth and adult) and 3 new volunteers in mentoring efforts. » Facilitated over 40 hours of training for potential and current mentors. The Muskegon County Mentoring Collaborative is a network of providers and supporters that values mentoring and seeks to strengthen the concept and extend the reach of mentoring programs in the area. Each member organization serves a specific youth or adult population. By working together, volunteers and consumers are able to find the program that best fits their needs and abilities. The Muskegon County Mentoring Collaborative is a program of MSU Extension and is co-chaired by the 4-H Mentoring Program Instructor. » Engaged 12 organizations in implementing the Mentor Michigan Quality Program Standards. » Hosted a large-scale recruitment event. » Created a new website to help potential volunteers and consumers find the programming most appropriate for their needs. www.mentormuskegon.org Mentors with mentees at outdoor skill building activities.
Greening Institute: Entrepreneurship & Innovation Counseling 6 Entrepreneurial Development-Over 140 individuals participated in one of seven three-hour Road to Independence Workshops presented by MSU Extension Educator, Mary Robb, aimed at giving basic start up information to budding entrepreneurs. At the end of each of the workshops, participants were asked to evaluate their experience. Of those responding, 93% felt they had gained a better understanding of why a business plan is important and 96% felt they had gained a better understanding of the kind of resources that are available to them in Muskegon County. In a follow up internet survey, 100% of those responding indicated the information gained from the workshop was helpful in their business start up, 15% had followed up with individual counseling either with SBTDC, SCORE, or MSU, and 38% used the information gained to complete a concept paper or business plan. In addition, 23% said they had registered their business name and 23% had filed for some type of legal designation. Of those responding, 16% indicated they have hired up to 3 additional employees since the workshop. In addition, almost 90% responded positively to the statements: “I have gained a better understanding of what it takes to succeed in business” ~Workshop participant Mary Robb teaching the Cottage Food Law & Beyond. Cottage Food Law and Beyond—Two workshops were offered in fall 2011 with attendance of almost 40 individuals. When surveyed, 92% indicated they had a better understanding of the Cottage Food Law and 90% indicated they felt the workshop was effective or very effective. “ I have gained a better understanding of what it takes to market a business” -Workshop Participant “I have gained information that I can put to use immediately” MSU Product Center for Agriculture and Natural Resources-As an Innovations Counselor for the MSU Product Center, Mary Robb provides individual counseling to start up food and agriculture based businesses, providing the local contact for businesses seeking access to MSU Campus faculty and specialized services. In this year, 154 counseling sessions have taken place with 48 individual entrepreneurs leading to three business launches and product placement for one entrepreneur with a major grocery store chain. ~Workshop participant
