Some common areas for discussion and action include: • Student rewards incentives for academic excellence • Student input on department operations • Student input on faculty search committees • Student input on curricular matters • Student input on technology • Student input on building safety, equipment, etc. • Sensitive issues affecting the department Elections occur annually in each major ensemble as well as the Jazz Ensemble, and class representatives are elected during a scheduled Convocation. For questions about the Advisory Council, please contact the program director. To bring issues forward to the attention of the department, please consult your representative. Annual Music Department Events The music department holds annual festivals and events, some of which are discussed below: Madrigal Feaste. The Fine Arts Departments collaborate on the production of an annual madrigal feast, showcasing the musical talent of the choral department, brass (Herald trumpets), winds (recorders, etc.), percussion, and strings. The period costumes and furnishings are extraordinary, lending this event a unique Renaissance experience. The Feaste is held in early December in the Krampert Black Box Theatre. Proceeds go to the Fine Arts Endowment fund, which is used to bring guest artists, masterclass clinicians, and other educational events to campus. Patrick Patton directs and coordinates this event. Casper College Kinser Jazz Festival. The Music Department attracts about 1,500 students from across the state to participate in this festival dedicated to jazz performance. Renowned guest artists give concerts, and important jazz educators serve as adjudicators for the performing ensembles. The festival includes both instrumental and vocal jazz and has evolved during the past 40 years. Jerome Fleg is the executive director; Patrick Patton and Douglas Bull serve as the co-directors of the event. Musical Theatre. The Music Department collaborates with the Theatre Department at least twice per year in producing musical theatre productions. Guest actors and directors often are invited to enhance the educational value of these productions. Music majors are welcome and encouraged to audition for roles in these productions. James Olm is the director of the musical theatre program. 15
Facilities The Department of Music is located in the Aley Fine Arts Center. It contains classrooms, rehearsal facilities, Durham Recital Hall (3rd floor), and practice rooms (1st floor), as well as the requisite equipment necessary to operate a Department of Music including two practice rooms with computer technology. In addition, multi-media stations have been installed, offering media presentations in the classroom. Building Hours Aley Fine Arts is open for classes and practice according to the following: Department Office (Aley Fine Arts 303A) • OPEN Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. • CLOSED Evenings and holidays per Casper College Student Handbook Instructional Areas • OPEN Monday – Friday, 6 a.m. - 10:30 p.m. • OPEN Saturday, 8 a.m. - 3 p.m. (subject to change) • OPEN Sunday, 1 p.m. - 5 p.m. (subject to change) Audio/Video Library The Music Office (FA 303) houses recordings and videos for student and faculty use. A listening lab is available for students who are often required to read or listen to materials placed on reserve by the faculty. Recordings, videos, and reference sources are not available for student check out, but can be used in the lab. Lockers Lockers are available for instrumental storage in the first floor hallway between rooms 106-107. They can be signed out in the Music Office during the first week of each semester. The lockers are keyed and a $5 refundable deposit is required to check out a locker. Although security is not a problem normally, instruments occasionally disappear from the Department. Please keep your locker locked at all times, particularly if you store a College instrument there. Practice Rooms Practice rooms are available to students on the first floor of Aley Fine Arts. No sign-up procedure is necessary; students may use any vacant room. Please refrain from taking food and beverages into the practice rooms and report any problems with the pianos to the Jennifer Cowell (268-2531). 16
