five rearing ponds will be available for fish production. These nursery ponds total nearly 41
acres with the three new Hazlet ponds capable of being double-cropped. Additional stocking
occurs from Illinois state hatcheries. Other major components of the fish management program
include coordination with the Army Corps of Engineers, biological surveys, a contract creel
survey each four years, and forage and fish habitat enhancement.
Fish Stocking
The current stocking plan calls for in excess of 12.5 million fish of six species to be released
annually, once all new nursery ponds are in production:
Largemouth Bass 51,300 – 6-8” (3 nursery ponds)
Sauger
11,500,000 fry
Sauger 120,000 – 2” (nursery ponds)
Striped Bass Hybrid* 400,000 – 2” (nursery ponds)
Striped Bass Hybrid* ??? – 6-8”
Black Crappie 50,000 – 3”
White Crappie 400,000 – 2” (nursery ponds)
Threadfin Shad 5,500 – 3” (collected from Baldwin Lake)
*Corps purchase pending funding
of at least 10/hour, and a PSD
of 40-60%
of at least 25 yearlings &
older/trap net; increase
growth of age 2+ fish by 0.1”
annually through year 2002
The overall guiding document for reservoirs is the Strategic Plan for Illinois Fisheries Resources
FY ‘99-’03. The following problems are discussed in the Strategic Plan as most important to the
Carlyle Lake reservoir:
‣ The supply of fish for supplemental stocking has been inadequate
‣ Sport fish production may be limited by forage production
‣ Lack of spawning and protective habitat limits fish production
‣ Fluctuating water levels can limit reproduction and angler access
‣ Inadequate funding limits fishery management
‣ Crappie and white bass management is difficult because populations fluctuate
‣ Forage is not sufficient for crappie and white bass
‣ Spawning habitat is limited
‣ Numbers of fingerlings available for stocking are inadequate
‣ Numbers of fish for stocking have been inadequate
‣ The supply of breeder sauger in Carlyle is inadequate
