The Artists<br />

Fernando J.S. Correia (Portugal) is a biologist<br />

who holds a MS degree in Animal Ecology.<br />

He specializes in Illustration and Scientific<br />

Communication.<br />

As an Assistant Lecturer in the Department<br />

of Biology at the University of Aveiro, he was<br />

responsible for the re-introduction of Scientifi c<br />

Illustration discipline in the Portuguese Higher Education. He was also<br />

a pioneer in digital techniques applicable to the scientific illustration<br />

field in Portugal (1998).<br />

Mr. Correia is currently the head of the Scientific Illustration Laboratory<br />

where he teaches and is responsible for the overall coordination of the<br />

Training Course in Scientific Illustration and the Exhibition ExpoDBIO<br />

Gallery. He is responsible for more than 75 intensive Science Illustration<br />

courses (Portugal and abroad), and was co-founder and first President<br />

of GNSI (Guild of Natural Science Illustrators) Chapter - Portugal. He<br />

has written more than 85 publications as single authorship including<br />

“Mealhada - natures unique” (2011) and “Paleoart - fossils that come<br />

to life” (2012) and 30 as co-author, including articles and books, both<br />

national and international editions.<br />

Mr. Correia is an active member of the Association Européenne des<br />

Illustrateurs Médicaux et Scientifiques AEIMS (Europe) and the Guild<br />

of Natural Science Illustrators / GNSI (USA). He was one of four<br />

Portuguese invited to participate in the renowned book “The Guild<br />

Handbook of Scientific Illustration” (Elaine Hodges, 2nd ed., 2003),<br />

among other books.<br />

Mr Correia has participated in more than 70 exhibitions worldwide.<br />

His artwork has been honoured with several awards and has been part<br />

Emily S. Damstra (Canada) is a natural science<br />

illustrator who draws and paints zoological,<br />

botanical, anthropological, ecological, and<br />

paleontological subjects. Her illustrations may be<br />

seen on interpretive signs in museums, zoos, and<br />

natural areas; in a wide array of books, magazines,<br />

and journals; at educational and commercial<br />

websites; and on over a dozen coins by the Royal Canadian Mint. She<br />

has a Master of Fine Arts degree in science illustration and her works<br />

have won awards in the juried natural science exhibits of the New York<br />

State Museum (Focus on Nature) and the Botanical Artists of Canada.<br />

Emily has always lived in the Great Lakes Region, where time spent<br />

gardening, hiking, and reading fuels her deep appreciation for the local<br />

Sara Menon (Italy) got an academic degree in<br />

Conservation of Cultural Heritage in Mantua in<br />

2008. She currently lives in Aquileia (Italy) where<br />

she works mainly as a freelance illustrator with<br />

museums, publishers and researchers. She usually<br />

works with watercolors and pencil renderings,<br />

paying close attention to the details of the subjects<br />

she depicts.<br />

In 2002 she started to work as a natural science illustrator, teaming<br />

up with an Italian forensic scientist, producing detailed plates for his<br />

publications.<br />

In Milan, thanks to IED (European Institute of Design) she had the<br />

opportunity to meet popular Italian illustrators, who taught her the<br />

methods and the techniques used in natural science illustration.<br />

Ms. Menon has worked with Italian and French publishers, like Il Prato<br />

(Padua, Italy) and Christophe Chomant éditeur (Rouen, France).<br />

Among her teaching experiences, in 2012 she had the opportunity<br />

to give a class on traditional techniques in the course of Biomedical<br />

Visualization at UIC in Chicago.<br />

Ms. Menon is involved with the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators<br />

and exhibited in 2011 and 2012. This is her first assignment with the<br />

A set of UNPA maximum cards will also be issued on 10 October 2013. Three different cards will be produced to accommodate the three different<br />

se-tenant blocks of four stamps being issued. Maximum cards are available in mint or cancelled condition.<br />
