SAN ANTONIO HOUSING AUTHORITY March 26, 2013 MEMORANDUM To: From: Presented by: RE: Resident ServQes Committee Lourdes C ~ ... ~ez, President and CEO Adrian Lop~ I >irector of Community Development Initiatives Update and discussion regarding Education Investment Foundation (EIF) Survey Results Summary The Education Investment Foundation (EIF), originally the SAHA Foundation, was formed in 1993 for the purpose of providing incentives to children of low-income families, in grades K-12, to stay in school and ultimately attend college. In 2007 the San Antonio Foundation was changed to the Education Investment Foundation, Inc. In previous years, the EIF developed two main programs: College Scholarships and Perfect Attendance. Since the Foundation's creation, over $550,000 in college scholarships and academic incentives have been awarded to deserving young SAHA housing program participants. Other EIF programs and events include: • Education Summit • Golden Gala- Senior Holiday Celebration • Alazan-Apache Courts Back to School Event • Fundraisers o Golf Tournament o Salute to Education Luncheon In May 2012, the EIF Committee began discussing other opportunities they wanted to explore in order to utilize the 501 c(3) status and build on the existing services provided to residents. In late summer, staff solicited and engaged an outside consultant to further facilitate the discussion with the EIF Committee. A questionnaire was created and presented to the EIF Advisory Committee in November 2012. The survey consisted of 28 questions and the Committee was asked to answer the questions h based on the following: Strongly Agree, Agree, Neutral, Disagree, or Strongly Disagree. The Survey was completed by seven of the ten committee members by January 15, 2013. Upon completion, the consultant provided a summary and presented it to the EIF Advisory Committee to ensure that there were no other revisions or additions. Below are the priorities that culminated from the results of the survey: • The EIF should continue to provide college scholarships to SAHA residents (graduating seniors/current college students) • The EIF should focus on developing or partnering with an organization to provide adult literacy programs • The EIF should expand the college scholarship program to other SAHA residents that are not graduating seniors and/or current college students • The EIF should focus on developing and providing incentives for reading achievement • The EIF should focus on developing mentoring programs Agenda Item No. 9
SAN ANTONIO HOUSING AUTHORITY March 26, 2013 • The EIF should raise funds to establish computer labs within SAHA communities • The EIF should develop partnerships with local colleges and universities to provide "prepaid scholarships/tuition" (2+2 Programs). - Gateway to College offers this program. A student can take college courses at while obtaining their High School Diploma. • The EIF should continue to provide financial incentives for Perfect Attendance and Honor Roll • The EIF should focus on developing or partnering with an organization to provide child literacy programs Staff is already working on some of the identified priorities, such as the Wi-Fi Initiative with learning centers in select communities. Within the next 30 days, staff will be reviewing these priorities in an effort to develop a draft work plan that will delineate both short-term and long-term goals. The work plan will address items such as fundraising , and provide direction to the Committee, staff, and the Agency as a whole. PROPOSED ACTION: None FINANCIAL IMPACT: None ATTACHMENTS: None
