PRESENT HORTICULTURAL SCENARIO IN HARYANA
The cultivation of horticultural crops is highly specialized, technical and
remunerative venture as compared to traditional crops being grown by the
farmers. Apart from this, majority of horticultural crops being perishable in nature,
requires, systematic planning for their development. Horticultural development
has assumed greater importance in recent years since this sector has been
identified as remunerative for diversification of land use which provides increased
employment opportunities, better return per unit area besides filling the nutritional
gaps. Farmers have started taking up horticulture crops as a separate viable
economic activity.
PRESENT STATUS
Haryana is predominantly an agrarian state, has diverse agro climatic conditions
and produces a wide range of tropical and sub tropical horticultural crops. The
state is ideally suited for exploiting the potential horticulture production, being in
close proximity to the region of National Capital Delhi, which is one of the biggest
markets of the world. With a view to give a boost to the growth of the horticulture
in the state, Haryana Govt. has bifurcated and independent Department of
Horticulture from Department of Agriculture in 1990-91. Since then the
department has made significant contribution in the development of horticulture
