He had long hair, multiple ear rings, tattoos and wore a workplace boiler suit. His
wife was cleanly, simply and neatly dressed, polite and had a toddler at hand.
His wife explained that they had seen another doctor twice in the last week about
his sore eye, but the drops and ointment he had been given had not helped.
Each time I turned to the patient to ask a question, his wife answered. In an
attempt to get at least some words from him, I asked him what type of work he
performed. Again his wife answered, explaining that before a serious head injury at
work he had been a boilermaker, and afterwards the company had kept him on as a
labourer. Since the injury he didn’t like to talk as he couldn’t speak properly.
Thinking he may have a stutter or some other speach impediment I examined his
red eye. Through a magnifying loupe, the foreign body imbedded on the cornea was
obvious, and soon removed.
As he left, the patient turned to me and said “Your f....ing better than the last
f...ing doctor. At least you f...ing well looked at me and f...ing well listened to my
f...ing wife”.
