Volunteers don’t get paid, not because they’re worthless,
but because they’re priceless.
Volunteers
Volunteers Who Lead
As a governing Board, the Retirement Housing Foundation
Board of Directors ensures that RHF remains true to its
mission and vision of providing housing to older adults,
economically disadvantaged families and people with
disabilities.
At this time there are ten members on the Board. Dr. Kawata
and Mr. Jahrling are from Hawaii; Mr. Masuda and Dr.
Sexton are from Southern California; Mr. King and Mr.
Simington are from Northern California; Dr. Trnka and
Mrs. Dremstedt are from Indiana; Mr. East is from Virginia
and Mrs. Potter is from Vermont. While they may come
from various parts of the country, they also represent a
variety of ethnic and professional backgrounds while
sharing a common goal; maintaining RHF’s national role as
a leader in affordable housing.
RHF Board with Dr. Joseph
The Board is made up of a simple majority of people who are members of the United Church of Christ. Serving
on the Board is purely voluntary and there is no monetary compensation.
During an average year, the Board will meet five times – this includes a visit to RHF communities once a year.
Throughout the year, numerous teleconferences are held with Dr. Joseph and senior staff members to bring the
Board up-to-date on various projects and/or items that need to be approved; they will attend conferences on the
state and national level to keep them abreast of what is happening in the field; and many will visit RHF
communities within or near their home state on their own time. At various times during the year some members
are working with RHF senior staff in seeking building sites for future RHF communities; working with local city
councils, county boards of supervisors and other housing planners; and, also working with their local RHF
communities. Some Board members will spend up to two months a year on RHF activities.
This is a reprint of Board Chair, Don King’s letter in RHF’s 2007 Annual Report.
Picture Perfect
If it is true that a picture says a thousand words, then the Public Relations
Department for RHF is blessed to have a team of talented volunteers who
stand behind a camera and speak volumes.
Ray East serves on the National Board of Directors for Retirement Housing
Foundation, and if that wasn’t enough, in his spare time has the task of going
out into the communities and taking pictures of our residents. His work can
be seen every time you visit RHF’s National Offices - he is the primary photographer for
“The Faces of RHF” display. “I have the wonderful job of meeting and talking with residents
throughout the country,” Ray will tell you.
Judy Moore’s volunteer role of photographer is one of many that she has at the national
office. Her gracious attitude of taking on any job that is given her helps immensely
in the running of the Public Relations office.
Anastacio Cubos works in the Information Technology Services department at RHF
but is called upon quite often for picture-taking duties of events that occur throughout
the year in the national office.
Like the volunteers who help in various capacities throughout the organization, the
service these volunteers perform is priceless.
