SELECTING ESCAPE DESCENDERS
1. Confirm compatibility of descender with rope diameter.
2. The descender should create sufficient friction to provide absolute control.
3. Test the descender with hardware, equipment, and gloves typically worn.
4. Know how to lock the descender off so that you can secure yourself and remain stopped on the rope with hands
off the device.
5. Be sure the descender is strong enough to have an adequate safety factor.
6. Select a descender with variable friction for long descents.
7. Ideally, a descender should be able to also function as a lowering device.
For ready to use Escape Kits, see pg. 63
ESCAPE
NFPA USE CATEGORIES
Equipment that is certified to meet NFPA 1983-06 will also bear a letter designator: L (Light),
G (General), or E (Escape). Look for the NFPA E rating on PMI Personal Escape Ropes and hardware.
E = Escape: Products rated with an E are considered suitable for escape, and should never be
used more than once in an actual emergency situation. Search lines do not generally carry the “E”
rating, and (unless otherwise noted by the manufacturer) should not be used for escape. The PMI
Element Escape Solution and the PMI X-It Kits meet the NFPA 1983, E requirements. We also offer
PMI PER (pg. 13) and 9 mm Escape Rope (pg. 13) that also meet the NFPA 1983, E certification.
The PED can be rigged two ways: A high friction
rig and standard rig. Versatility at its best.
