In keeping with the IB’s principles, as well as holistic learning the IBMYP emphasizes intercultural awareness to promote better understanding of, and respect for, students’ own, and other cultures, and stresses the importance of communication through the command of their own language and a foreign language. Students following the IBMYP will study from each of the eight subject groups: Language A the student’s best language, often the language of instruction Language B a modern foreign language Humanities history and geography Science biology, chemistry, physics Mathematics Arts visual art/design, music, drama Technology information technology and design technology Physical Education The Areas of Interaction At ISD we use the icons shown below to give the students a visual representation of each of the five Areas of Interaction. 6
AREA OF INTERACTION: APPROACHES TO LEARNING (AtL) • How do I learn best? • How do I know? • How do I communicate my understanding? AtL is concerned with the development of effective study skills, sometimes referred to as “learning how to learn.” Beyond useful techniques, the goal is to nurture the intellectual discipline and habits of mind that will result in critical, coherent, and independent thought, and in the capacity for problem solving and decision-making. At ISD, we have organized the skills, attitudes and values we believe students need to be successful learners into the following six domains: Organizational Values & Attitudes Collaborative Communication Informational Problem Solving& Meta-strategies Developing • Information Processing skills • Enquiry skills • Reasoning skills • Creative thinking Skills • Evaluation skills Developing Self Assessment Skills: • Assessment against a rubric • Knowing when to ask for help • Identification of strengths and weaknesses • Identification of alternatives and strategies • Analysis of criticism • Assessment of work across a time period • Defining the problem • Locating the needed information • Selecting resources • Organizing information • Presenting findings • Evaluating the work done • Listening carefully and actively to others • Identifying the message and the purpose of a speaker/writer, both explicit and implied • Reading fluently a range of literary, nonfiction, and non-print texts and reflecting critically on what is read • Presenting thoughts clearly, coherently, and passionately • Establishing a functioning cooperative group • Managing the group’s activities in completing the task and maintaining an effective working relationship among others • Evaluating the progress of the group • Resolving conflicts effectively • Confidence that one can solve problems and think creatively • Willingness to take risks - confidence to succeed and fail without anxiety • Motivation to do ones best • Honesty, personally and intellectually • Respect for self, as well as for the ideas and feelings of others. • Managing time • Coming to class equipped, ready to work • Organizing materials • Evaluating goals Approaches to Learning is not a separate class; it is an integral part of every class in grades 6-10. Teachers will focus on only a selected number of skills per unit. AtL skills are not graded but the student’s progress will be noted on the report card. The intention is to enable students to become masters of their own learning. By “learning how to learn”, ISD students will be able to access and utilize information, to transfer and apply knowledge, to make meaningful links between subject areas, to tap multiple intelligences, and to succeed in an independent and changing world. 7
