2.5. Operational def<strong>in</strong>itions<br />

<strong>Child</strong>: Any person male or female; resid<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>Nepal</strong> at the time <strong>of</strong> research and under the<br />

age <strong>of</strong> 18.<br />

Tourist: Any person; male or female, not orig<strong>in</strong>ally from <strong>Nepal</strong> and/ or have foreign<br />

citizenship and visits <strong>Nepal</strong> for short period <strong>of</strong> time.<br />

<strong>Child</strong> <strong>Sex</strong> <strong>Tourism</strong>: The sexual use/abuse <strong>of</strong> children by the tourists and/ or the visits <strong>of</strong><br />

tourists specially planned for the purpose <strong>of</strong> sexual use/abuse <strong>of</strong> children, regardless <strong>of</strong><br />

commercial ga<strong>in</strong> by the children.<br />

Commercial <strong>Sex</strong>ual Exploitation <strong>of</strong> <strong>Child</strong>ren: <strong>Sex</strong>ual use <strong>of</strong> children where the sexual<br />

activity with the children is bartered for <strong>in</strong> cash, k<strong>in</strong>d or any other form <strong>of</strong> consideration.<br />

<strong>Sex</strong>ual Relationships: All relationships where there is sexual contact with children<br />

<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g kiss<strong>in</strong>g, fondl<strong>in</strong>g, show<strong>in</strong>g pornographic pictures, tak<strong>in</strong>g nude pictures etc.<br />

2.6. Implement<strong>in</strong>g Organisation<br />

Established <strong>in</strong> 1987, <strong>Child</strong> Workers <strong>in</strong> <strong>Nepal</strong> Concerned Centre (CWIN) is a pioneer<br />

organisation <strong>in</strong> <strong>Nepal</strong> for the rights <strong>of</strong> the child and aga<strong>in</strong>st child labour. CWIN is an<br />

advocacy organisation for the child's rights with focus on children liv<strong>in</strong>g and work<strong>in</strong>g<br />

under the most difficult circumstances. CWIN's ma<strong>in</strong> areas <strong>of</strong> concern are child labour,<br />

street children, child marriage, bonded labour, traffick<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> children, children <strong>in</strong> conflict<br />

with laws and commercial-sexual exploitation <strong>of</strong> children. As a concerned organisation<br />

for children at-risk, CWIN has been also undertak<strong>in</strong>g a number <strong>of</strong> social, support and<br />

rehabilitation activities through its various programmes.<br />

As a watchdog <strong>in</strong> the field <strong>of</strong> child rights <strong>in</strong> the country, CWIN acts as a voice for<br />

children through lobby<strong>in</strong>g, campaign and pressure to the government to protect and<br />

promote children's rights <strong>in</strong> the country, and to end all k<strong>in</strong>ds <strong>of</strong> exploitation, abuse and<br />

discrim<strong>in</strong>ation aga<strong>in</strong>st children. And it is <strong>in</strong> this l<strong>in</strong>e that this research project on <strong>Child</strong><br />

<strong>Sex</strong> <strong>Tourism</strong> was undertaken by CWIN.<br />

2.7. Location <strong>of</strong> the Research<br />

<strong>Tourism</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Nepal</strong> has flourished mostly around urban centres. It is usually through the<br />

contact po<strong>in</strong>ts based <strong>in</strong> these urban centres that the tourist groups disperse <strong>in</strong> the different<br />

parts <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nepal</strong>. The research will therefore concentrate on the follow<strong>in</strong>g sites.<br />

• <strong>Kathmandu</strong> Valley (<strong>Kathmandu</strong>, Patan, Bhaktapur) – is known for its cultural<br />

heritage and ancient architecture. The durbar square areas <strong>of</strong> these places have<br />

been enlisted <strong>in</strong> the World Heritage List. The rich architecture and amalgamation<br />

<strong>of</strong> eastern and western culture has been the ma<strong>in</strong> attraction <strong>of</strong> tourism <strong>in</strong> this<br />

place. <strong>Kathmandu</strong>, also be<strong>in</strong>g the capital <strong>of</strong> the country, is the central po<strong>in</strong>t to go<br />

to other tourist dest<strong>in</strong>ations.<br />
