Follow<strong>in</strong>g are the pr<strong>of</strong>iles <strong>of</strong> the children and adults <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> commercial sexual<br />

exploitation; as narrated <strong>in</strong> the discussion with the children. The follow<strong>in</strong>g pr<strong>of</strong>iles show<br />

the perceptions <strong>of</strong> the children on these issues<br />

5.1. <strong>Child</strong> Victims <strong>of</strong> Commercial <strong>Sex</strong>ual Exploitation <strong>in</strong> <strong>Tourism</strong><br />

Average Pr<strong>of</strong>ile<br />

Age: 8-14yrs<br />

Gender: both boys and girls; but boys preferred<br />

Background: children without family; work<strong>in</strong>g children, children from poor families<br />

Accord<strong>in</strong>g to the perception <strong>of</strong> the children, 32% <strong>of</strong> them said that it could happen to<br />

both boys and girls whereas 18% said that it could happen to only boys and 10% said that<br />

it could take place only with girls. 40% said they had no idea at all. 24% <strong>of</strong> the children<br />

said that this could take place with the children <strong>of</strong> the age group 10-14.<br />

5.2 <strong>Child</strong> <strong>Sex</strong> Exploiters<br />

Country: European countries; Australia<br />

Age: 35-50 <strong>in</strong> average<br />

Gender: Both but usually male.<br />

Background: work<strong>in</strong>g and usually backpackers.<br />

Accord<strong>in</strong>g to the total number <strong>of</strong> the children <strong>in</strong>terviewed, 20% felt that only new tourists<br />

would engage <strong>in</strong> these k<strong>in</strong>ds <strong>of</strong> activities. 18% <strong>of</strong> the children said that old tourists would<br />

engage <strong>in</strong> these.<br />

26% <strong>of</strong> the children said that both male and female children could equally get engaged <strong>in</strong><br />

this where as 10% said that only male can do this and 2% said that only female can do it.<br />

As far as economic status <strong>of</strong> the tourist is concerned 16% <strong>of</strong> the children said they were<br />

rich tourists and 15% said that they were backpackers who did not have much money<br />

with them.<br />

25% <strong>of</strong> the children reported that they were Europeans, 21% said that they were<br />

Americans, 4% South Asians and 7% Japanese/ Ch<strong>in</strong>ese orig<strong>in</strong>.<br />
