Why are children attracted to the tourists?<br />

• Tourists look very nice. They behave very well with the children and <strong>in</strong> many<br />

cases help the children. They give food, clothes and money. In fact they treat<br />

children better than the locals.<br />

• <strong>Child</strong>ren like tourists because they are one <strong>of</strong> the best friends they have ever had.<br />

Usually people drive them away; they scold them and sometimes also beat them.<br />

But tourist are very friendly, they like talk<strong>in</strong>g to them and try to help them as<br />

much as possible.<br />

• Most <strong>of</strong> the children are always <strong>in</strong> need to money or food. They come from quite<br />

a poor family and they have their own need that takes them to the tourists.<br />

• The tourists look very attractive also because <strong>of</strong> the perception that they have a lot<br />

<strong>of</strong> money. They deal <strong>in</strong> dollars and other foreign currency; which certa<strong>in</strong>ly have<br />

more value than the local currency. Even if they get a dollar it would be a big<br />

amount <strong>of</strong> money for the children.<br />

• There have been many <strong>in</strong>stances where the tourists have genu<strong>in</strong>ely helped the<br />

children. Therefore, the children hope that if they also meet a good-hearted tourist<br />

which would make their life happier.<br />

• Even some <strong>of</strong> the families encourage their children to get close to tourist so that<br />

they could help them.<br />

How do children come <strong>in</strong> contact with the tourists?<br />

• It is more on the personal level than through a mediator that the children come <strong>in</strong><br />

contact with the tourists.<br />

• <strong>Child</strong>ren see tourists <strong>in</strong> different places; while they are work<strong>in</strong>g. In most <strong>of</strong> the<br />

cases; it is the children who approach the tourists ask<strong>in</strong>g for some money.<br />

Begg<strong>in</strong>g is one <strong>of</strong> the most common forms <strong>of</strong> approach<strong>in</strong>g the tourist. Even those<br />

children; who do not usually beg would switch <strong>in</strong>to begg<strong>in</strong>g if they feel that the<br />

tourist would give them some money.<br />

• Another popular form <strong>of</strong> approach<strong>in</strong>g tourist is through vend<strong>in</strong>g. Many children<br />

work <strong>in</strong> the tourist areas as vendors and hawkers. They go after the tourists to sell<br />

their goods.<br />

• And if they see any tourists giv<strong>in</strong>g money or buy<strong>in</strong>g goods from the child then<br />

other children would also approach them very fast.<br />

What type <strong>of</strong> help do the tourists provide?<br />

• The most common form <strong>of</strong> help provided by the tourist is money, food and<br />

clothes.<br />

• Tourists also give children stationary and other educational materials<br />
