O N C A M P U S Fashion Show Moore’s Fashion Design Department invites critics and judges who are industry professionals from around the nation, including many Moore alumnae who return to participate. This year’s swimwear critic Toby Markulin ’89 has a relationship with Moore that spans 20 years. The two biggest awards of the night were “Most Saleable Award” and “Best of Show.” Moore Board \-member Anthony DeSabato, Executive VP, Corporate and Labor Relations, Charming Shoppes, Inc., presented the “Most Saleable Award” to senior Laine Henry for her childrenswear collection inspired by Maruice Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are. “Best of Show” went to senior Jakia Handy for her womenswear collection. Handy used Moore Basics Chair and Fine Arts Professor Moe Brooker’s original art printed on silk for some of her collection. Dawn Mohr, Director of Product Development at David’s Bridal, presented the award. 1 Last-minute preparations gave way to lights, music and dramatic fashions, as models took to the runway at Moore’s Fashion Show 2008, May 18. Funded by presenting sponsor David’s Bridal and corporate patron Charming Shoppes, Inc., the program was held at the Society Hill Sheraton. The Show started with two collections by junior fashion design students: swimwear and menswear. Swimwear took inspiration from the flags of particular countries, while menswear was inspired by men’s hat styles. The juniors worked in teams for menswear. For the childrenswear collections by sophomores, the theme was Strike a Posy. The spotlight then shone on the eighteen senior fashion design collections. Many of the collections included handwork and original fabrics. The seniors each did a collection in a category of their choice. The Show finale, eveningwear, highlighted the theme Bon Voyage: Decked Out in Navy and White. The critic for the eveningwear segment was Alexandra de Yonge ’02, a designer with Diane Von Furstenberg in NY. 16 2
