North Dakota First Grade Common Core!The Next Generation Strand: Speaking and Listening Cluster: Presentation of Knowledge and Ideas Topic: Oral Expression Standard: SL.1.4 Describe people, places, things, and events with relevant details, expressing ideas and feelings clearly. I Can: • Express my ideas and feelings clearly Notes: Comprehension strategies supported in this standard include making connections. Tasks: • Tell students to stand up and walk around. Then, tell them to walk like they are going out to ice cream having them note how their gaits changes. Next, tell them they should walk after they got in trouble, again, note how their gaits change. Continue this game as time permits with other scenarios. When finished, discuss how feelings changed using descriptive language (i.e. excited instead of happy). Record responses on chart. I Can: • Use pictures or things to help people understand me Notes: • Comprehension strategies supported in this standard include visualizing. Tasks: • Ask the students to think about how all of the Cinderella stories are different because of the time and place where they happen. Challenge the students to draw the "trying on the slipper" scene as if it were happening right now and in the place where they live. Scan the pictures and create a Power Point slide for each image.
