Nail a career in building<br />

The building industry needs workers at all levels, so if<br />

you’ve got a good eye for detail, can do calculations<br />

and are reliable then carpentry could be the right career<br />

for you. This six-month Certificate is for people with no<br />

previous building industry experience, and will develop<br />

your fundamental construction skills and knowledge.<br />

As part <strong>of</strong> the programme, you will learn about and take<br />

part in the construction <strong>of</strong> a non-consented timber-framed<br />

building. Alongside basic carpentry skills you’ll also learn<br />

about the safety awareness necessary for employment<br />

on a building site.<br />

If you want to further your training you can apply for<br />

the MIT Certificate in Carpentry, or if you’re ready to<br />

get amongst it you’ll be able to work on residential or<br />

commercial building projects under supervision.<br />

Entry-level positions in the building industry working on<br />

residential or commercial projects under supervision.<br />

Entry Requirements<br />

Applicants must meet the following entry requirements:<br />

• Be physically capable <strong>of</strong> completing the practical aspects<br />

<strong>of</strong> the programme, which may include working at heights<br />

and<br />

• Have English language competence to undertake this<br />

programme, which is taught and assessed in English.<br />

Any applicant whose first language is not English may be<br />

required to provide evidence <strong>of</strong> an IELTS (Academic) band<br />

score <strong>of</strong> 5.5 (with no band below 5.0) or equivalent.<br />

Where the programme is oversubscribed preference<br />

will be given to applicants who can demonstrate recent<br />

involvement within the building industry, for example:<br />

• recent part- or full-time employment directly within the<br />

industry<br />

recent work experience in related fields<br />

• completion <strong>of</strong> a comparable pre-trade course.<br />

• Can show oral and/or written evidence <strong>of</strong> their ability<br />

to commit to the achievement <strong>of</strong> set goals. Written<br />

examples may include:<br />

- School reports<br />

- Sporting achievement<br />

- Community involvement<br />

- Successful completion <strong>of</strong> other programmes (e.g. PTE<br />

programme).<br />

The above selection criteria will be assessed through an<br />

interview process.<br />

Note: Applicants are welcome to bring family/wha - nau<br />

support to the interview.<br />
