Do you think the trades might be a good fit for you, but are
not sure which career path to take or don’t have the entry
requirements for higher level courses? The Certificate in
Introduction to Trades is the ideal taster programme and has
courses in each of the trades – carpentry, electrical, plumbing
and vehicle technology. You’ll be specifically prepared for
entry into certificate-level trades programmes. The courses
are structured to develop your learning style, and literacy and
numeracy skills.
On graduating you’ll have a good idea of what each trade is
about and have a wide range of choices for further training
in automotive, carpentry, fabrication, mechanical or electrical
engineering, or plumbing and gasfitting.
Or if you want further training you can staircase into higher
level certificates.
Programme Summary
Students complete the following courses:
• Carpentry
• Electrical
• Plumbing
• Vehicle Technology.
Further Training or Study
Certificate in Entry to Carpentry (Level 3)
Certificate in Plumbing and Gasfitting (Level 3)
Certificate in Electrical and Electronic Engineering (Level 3).
Career Opportunities
Further study in your preferred trade at Level 3.
Entry Requirements
Applicants must meet the following entry requirements:
• Be physically capable of completing the practical
aspects of the programme and
• Have English language competence to undertake this
programme, which is taught and assessed in English.
Any applicant whose first language is not English may
be required to provide evidence of an overall IELTS
(Academic) band score of 5.5 (with no band less than 5.0),
or equivalent.
Applicants must be able to demonstrate the following
attributes:
• strong motivation to work in the trades
• the ability to work in a team
• the ability to communicate in groups and one-on-one
• a mature approach to study
• a mature attitude to health and safety in the
workplace.
Applicants will be accepted in order of application.
Students who have attained the age of 20 years and do
not hold the minimum entry requirements for a programme
will be eligible to be enrolled as a student where their
previous educational, work or life experience indicates
they have a reasonable likelihood of success. Students
who have not attained the age of 20 years and do not
hold the required minimum entry requirements for a
programme may also be eligible to enrol in exceptional
circumstances. Such decisions will be made by the
Faculty Dean.
