Accomplishments<br />

<strong>Department</strong> Saves <strong>Ohio</strong>ans Almost $10 Million<br />

In 2008, the <strong>Department</strong> saved or recovered more than $9.7 million<br />

for <strong>Ohio</strong>ans. The <strong>Department</strong>’s consumer services staff fielded 128,061<br />

phone calls in 2008 and handled 6,506 consumer complaints. There<br />

were 634 fewer consumer complaints filed in 2008, down from<br />

7,140 complaints in 2007. The <strong>Department</strong> reported claim denials<br />

from insurance companies were the number one complaint <strong>of</strong> <strong>Ohio</strong><br />

insurance consumers in 2008. Of these, the majority related to denial <strong>of</strong><br />

health insurance claims.<br />

OSHIIP Hosts Pilot “Welcome to Medicare”<br />

Events in Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinnati<br />

<strong>Ohio</strong> <strong>Insurance</strong> <strong>Department</strong> Hold<br />

<strong>State</strong>wide Medicare Check-up Days<br />

The <strong>Department</strong>’s <strong>Ohio</strong> Senior Health <strong>Insurance</strong> Information<br />

Program (OSHIIP) conducted Medicare Check-Up Days in<br />

each <strong>of</strong> <strong>Ohio</strong>’s 88 counties to compliment Medicare’s annual<br />

open enrollment period, Nov. 15 to Dec. 31. The events<br />

helped beneficiaries determine what Medicare coverage<br />

suits them best. Nearly 27,000 <strong>Ohio</strong>ans were assisted through<br />

outreach and personalized assistance.<br />

The <strong>Ohio</strong> <strong>Department</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Insurance</strong>’s <strong>Ohio</strong> Senior Health <strong>Insurance</strong> Information Program<br />

(OSHIIP) and partner organizations held pilot “Welcome to Medicare” events in Cleveland,<br />

Columbus, and Cincinnati. The events were held for <strong>Ohio</strong>ans who would have soon turned<br />

65 so they can learn about Medicare and more than 950 people attended them.<br />
