Director Hudson Opposes Optional Federal Insurance Charter
Insurance Director Mary Jo Hudson spoke before the Ohio General Assembly’s House Insurance
Committee in February to express her support for a legislative resolution in support of state-based
insurance regulation. The Department – along with other state insurance agencies – opposes a separate,
federally-based regulator for the business of insurance. The Director said that insurance produces many
issues unique to other industries – such as the federal oversight of banking and securities – that require
local expertise. Insurance products can generate a high level of consumer backlash and dissatisfaction
that requires a higher level of regulatory resources and responsiveness, best done by state officials, the
Director said.
Department Assures Ohioans Insurance Industry is Strong, Despite
Economic Downturn
Department officials worked to assure Ohioans that the insurance industry is viable and solvent, despite
the recent economic downturn and the troubles being reported internationally regards American
International Group (AIG), the world’s largest financial conglomerate. AIG was given a federal government
financial lifeline due to its poor investment decisions made by its parent company, regulated by the
federal government. However, the Department reported that AIG’s insurance company subsidiaries that
operate in Ohio are financially stable and the Department will continue its vigilant oversight of them. The
Department also cautioned agents against disparaging AIG products using misinformation in order to
unnecessarily resell insurance to consumers.
