<strong>Department</strong> Areas<br />
Product Regulation and Actuarial Services Division<br />
Product Regulation and Actuarial Services – which includes the <strong>Department</strong>’s Life, Health and Managed<br />
Care, Property and Casualty and Actuarial Service Units areas – reviews the contractual provisions <strong>of</strong> most<br />
insurance policies sold in <strong>Ohio</strong> to ensure they are in compliance with <strong>Ohio</strong> and federal laws.<br />
Life, Health and Managed Care Unit<br />
The Life, Health and Managed Care Unit is charged by statute to review the contractual provisions<br />
<strong>of</strong> all life, annuity, health and accident policy forms, including Managed Care Health Insuring<br />
Corporations (HMO) form filings and solicitations, marketed to <strong>Ohio</strong> residents. The pr<strong>of</strong>essionals in<br />
this unit ensure that policy forms are in compliance with <strong>Ohio</strong> law and regulations, reviewing nearly<br />
5,000 forms annually. Additionally, the pr<strong>of</strong>essionals in this unit are responsible for the review and<br />
licensure <strong>of</strong> Health care Alliances, and the review and accreditation <strong>of</strong> Internal Review Organizations.<br />
The pr<strong>of</strong>essionals in this unit provide guidance to other <strong>Department</strong> divisions, the insurance industry<br />
and the legislature on relative issues, and they participate in a variety <strong>of</strong> national working group<br />
forums to develop standard insurance practices.<br />
Property and Casualty Unit<br />
The Property and Casualty Unit is responsible for the review <strong>of</strong> policy forms, endorsements, and<br />
manual rules for products marketed to <strong>Ohio</strong> consumers by <strong>Ohio</strong> licensed property and casualty<br />
companies. The pr<strong>of</strong>essionals in this unit review product forms to ensure that policies issued<br />
are in compliance with <strong>Ohio</strong> law, reviewing more than 5,000 filings annually. Products reviewed<br />
include commercial lines (e.g. insurance for businesses – auto, general liability, pr<strong>of</strong>essional liability<br />
including medical malpractice, property, crime, fidelity and surety) and personal lines (e.g. insurance<br />
for individuals and families – auto and homeowners). The pr<strong>of</strong>essionals in this unit also review<br />
title insurance, risk purchasing and risk retention group registrations, and surplus lines reports.<br />
The pr<strong>of</strong>essional in this unit also provide guidance to other divisions, the insurance industry and<br />
the legislature on property and casualty insurance issues, and participates in a variety <strong>of</strong> National<br />
Association <strong>of</strong> <strong>Insurance</strong> Commissioners (NAIC) committees, task forces and working groups.<br />
