About the Director An accomplished public servant, attorney and community leader, Mary Jo Hudson officially took office as the 46th Director of the Ohio Department of Insurance on January 8, 2007. She was appointed by Governor Ted Strickland to join his cabinet on December 21, 2006. Under Director Hudson’s leadership, the Department has made great strides to protect insurance consumers and promote a healthy insurance market. The Department has increased its efforts to empower Ohio’s seniors to protect themselves and has fostered collaboration among its internal divisions and with other state agencies to combat predatory insurance sales practices that are directed toward Ohio senior citizens. Director Hudson led Governor Strickland’s efforts to reduce the number of uninsured Ohioans by 2011. The Department led a comprehensive approach to covering Ohio’s uninsured residents, bringing together a broad-based coalition of stakeholders and interested parties. With the group’s recommendations Ohio’s budget bill, H.B. 1 of the 128th General Assembly, will now enable approximately 109,000 more Ohioans to access to health insurance and allow for improvements in the quality and cost effectiveness of Ohio’s health care system. Ohio is a member of the Interstate Insurance Product Regulation Compact (“Compact”), which, enables an insurer to file a single asset-based (life, annuities, long term care, disability insurance) product that, when approved, can be sold in all 36 member states. In 2008, Director Hudson served as the vice chair of the Interstate Compact’s Management Committee, and has led Ohio’s efforts to work with other states to develop common product standards, which will make the insurance marketplace more efficient. Prior to her appointment as Director of the Department of Insurance, Director Hudson served on Columbus City Council from 2004 to 2006. Director Hudson also practiced law for eighteen years, most recently with the Columbus offices of Bailey Cavalieri LLC and its predecessor, Arter and Hadden LLP, focusing on insurance regulation and liquidation law, consumer finance and retail law compliance, unclaimed property planning and reporting, commercial lending, state and federal advertising law, and general corporate matters. From 1989 to 1995, Director Hudson worked as an attorney with the Ohio Department of Insurance and as General Counsel for the Office of the Ohio Insurance Liquidator. 4 www.insurance.ohio.gov
About The Ohio Department of Insurance The Ohio Department of Insurance, now located in downtown Columbus, is one of the state’s largest consumer protection agencies and is responsible for the education and protection of Ohioans who purchase insurance and for oversight of the insurance industry in the state. The Department is charged under Ohio Revised Code Chapters 39 and 17 with the responsibility of monitoring the financial condition of approximately 1,650 insurance companies, with primary regulatory responsibility for 261 insurance companies domiciled in Ohio, as of December 31, 2008. The Department monitors the solvency of these companies, assures that the policy and rate information used by these companies complies with Ohio law, and monitors the sales practices of these companies. In 2008, insurance companies operating in Ohio wrote more than $55 billion in insurance premiums, and were assessed approximately $432 million, which is credited to the state’s General Revenue Fund. The Department licensed and regulated the activities of approximately 1,665 insurance companies, 258,000 agents and 18,700 agencies doing business in Ohio. Additionally, the Department provides consumers with assistance in resolving issues and complaints regarding insurance companies and agents, and sponsors numerous educational programs.
