About The <strong>Ohio</strong> <strong>Department</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Insurance</strong><br />

The <strong>Ohio</strong> <strong>Department</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Insurance</strong>, now located in downtown Columbus, is one<br />

<strong>of</strong> the state’s largest consumer protection agencies and is responsible for the<br />

education and protection <strong>of</strong> <strong>Ohio</strong>ans who purchase insurance and for oversight<br />

<strong>of</strong> the insurance industry in the state. The <strong>Department</strong> is charged under <strong>Ohio</strong><br />

Revised Code Chapters 39 and 17 with the responsibility <strong>of</strong> monitoring the<br />

financial condition <strong>of</strong> approximately 1,650 insurance companies, with primary<br />

regulatory responsibility for 261 insurance companies domiciled in <strong>Ohio</strong>, as <strong>of</strong><br />

December 31, 2008. The <strong>Department</strong> monitors the solvency <strong>of</strong> these companies,<br />

assures that the policy and rate information used by these companies complies<br />

with <strong>Ohio</strong> law, and monitors the sales practices <strong>of</strong> these companies.<br />

In 2008, insurance companies operating in <strong>Ohio</strong> wrote more than $55 billion<br />

in insurance premiums, and were assessed approximately $432 million, which<br />

is credited to the state’s General Revenue Fund. The <strong>Department</strong> licensed and<br />

regulated the activities <strong>of</strong> approximately 1,665 insurance companies, 258,000<br />

agents and 18,700 agencies doing business in <strong>Ohio</strong>. Additionally, the <strong>Department</strong><br />

provides consumers with assistance in resolving issues and complaints regarding<br />

insurance companies and agents, and sponsors numerous educational programs.<br />
