LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
Welcome to the 10th Autumn Brew Review at the Historic Grain Belt Brewery. Its hard not to look back at what has happened
this being the tenth ABR. My first ABR was in 2004 when the event was at its original location, Peavey Plaza. I remember
walking up and buying tickets the day of the event and being exposed to many beers I had not drank before. About 800 people
attended the event and selling out the event was a challenge. We now have this fantastic location that resonates to beer fans
for it’s history. Be sure to go on a tour with Doug Hoverson today to check out this great space.
There are many individuals to thank that got ABR started, Dave Berg and Paul Norton are the individuals I know, but there are
many I can’t name. I am familiar with the individuals that made this 10th ABR happen, namely the Minnesota Craft Brewer’s
Guild festival committee - Bob Blair, Bryon Tonnis, Bob McKenzie, Mike Hoops, as well as Laura & Colin Mullen, and our great
sponsors, advertisers, event partners, volunteers, brewers and distributors.
I also want to thank all the Minnesota beer drinkers that are the driving force behind the growth of ABR. Your passion,
consumption, and advocacy of our beers are why we see more beer bars opening, more craft beer available at existing bars and
more craft beer in liquor stores. Continue to demand great beers and that’s what you will get. Grab your glass, enjoy the beers,
the site, the bands and hopefully you will find some great beers you have not had before!
21st Amendment Brewery - #40
San Francisco, CA | www.21st-amendment.com
In 2000, Nico Freccia and Shaun O’Sullivan founded the 21st Amendment Brewery in San Francisco’s historic South
Park neighborhood. Nico Freccia and Shaun O’Sullivan met in early 1995 in San Francisco. Both had just moved from
southern California to the Bay area when they heard the calling of beer. O’Sullivan, a former photographer and paralegal,
“traded his suits for boots and was saved by beer”. He moved to Berkeley and took a job as assistant brewer at the Triple
Rock Brewery there. Freccia, a writer, actor and, by extension, restaurant professional, was also an avid homebrewer.
Frustrated with the lack of beer culture in the L.A. area, he moved to San Francisco and began writing for the Celebrator
Beer News, the west’s largest beer publication. Freccia and O’Sullivan met, became friends and, while sitting together
in a summer class on brewing science at UC Davis, hatched their plan for what would become the 21st Amendment.
Hell or High Watermelon Wheat [ 4.9 % ABV ]
We start by brewing a classic American wheat beer, which undergoes a
traditional secondary fermentation using fresh watermelon. A strawcolored,
refreshing beer with a kiss of watermelon aroma and flavor.
□□
Back in Black [ 6.8 % ABV ]
Inspired by Paul Revere’s midnight ride, we rebelled against the British
style IPA, embraced the more aggressive American version and then
recast it in bold, brave, defiant black. Our Black IPA is a Declaration
of Independence from the tyranny of the expected. Brewed like an
American IPA but with the addition of rich, dark malts, this beer has all
the flavor and hop character you expect with a smooth, mellow finish.
Voted one of the 25 Best Beers on Earth in Men’s Journal Magazine.
□□
Hop Crisis [ 9.7 % ABV | 94 IBU’s ]
The name is a tribute to the hop shortage a few years ago. A imperial
IPA aged in oak using Columbus, Centennial and cascades as the
bittering hops and dry hopping with Simcoe, Ahtanum, Amarillo, and
Cascades.
Anchor Brewing Co. - #32
San Francisco, CA | www.anchorbrewing.com
Fritz Maytag became the Brewery’s sole owner. Two years later—and one hundred years after German brewer Gottlieb
Brekle founded the brewery that became Anchor—Fritz began bottling Anchor Steam Beer. This was the first bottled
Anchor Steam in modern times. By late 1975, Anchor Beer was on its way producing 4 other style of beers.
Brewmaster: Fritz Maytag
□□
Anchor Steam [ 4.9 % ABV ]
Anchor Steam derives its unusual name from the 19th century when
“steam” seems to have been a nickname for beer brewed on the West
Coast of America under primitive conditions and without ice. The
brewing methods of those days are a mystery and, although there are
many theories, no one can say with certainty why the word “steam”
came to be associated with beer. For many decades Anchor alone has
used this quaint name for its unique beer. In modern times, “Steam”
has become a trademark of Anchor Brewing.
Notes -
□□
Anchor Liberty [ 5.9 % ABV ]
A special top-fermenting ale yeast is used during fermentation and is
responsible for many of Liberty Ale’s subtle flavors and characteristics.
Carbonation is produced by an entirely natural process called
“bunging,” which produces champagne-like bubbles. Dry-hopping
(adding fresh hops to the brew during aging), imparts a unique aroma
to the ale. It is a process rarely used in this country today.
August Schell Brewing Co. - #1
New Ulm, MN | www.schellsbrewery.com | ** MN GUILD MEMBER **
Proudly celebrating our 150th Anniversary, the August Schell Brewing Company is America’s second oldest, familyowned
brewery. Located on the wooded hillside banks overlooking the Cottonwood River in New Ulm, Minnesota, the
August Schell Brewing Company has been quietly crafting a family of fine German specialty beers since 1860.
Brewmaster: Jeremy Kral | Head Brewer: Dave Berg
□□
Schell’s Stag Series No. 2 [ 6.9 % ABV | 29 IBU’s ]
August Schell’s interpretation of a traditional Belgian Farmhouse Ale.
This Farmhouse Ale exhibits an earthy/nutty character due to the
generous use of Minnesota Wild Rice, the state grain of Minnesota.
The Wild Rice is combined with 2-Row, Munich, Vienna, and a touch
of Rye malt to create a complementary backbone to the unique
fermentation characteristics of the yeast. Dry and thirst quenching,
this Farmhouse Ale is hopped with Goldings.
□□
Schell’s Hopfenmalz [ 4.9 % ABV | 50 IBU’s ]
Hopfenmalz incorporates the elegant drinkability of a Pilsner, the
bready maltiness of a Vienna Lager, and the hopping of a Pale Ale. The
malty backbone is beautifully balanced by a bright, citrusy hop aroma
and bitterness. Then we lagered it for an extended period of time to
give it a crisp, dry finish.
□□
Schell’s Oktoberfest [ 5.5 % ABV | 21 IBU’s ]
Deep copper in color. Medium to slightly full-bodied. Slight hop
bitterness complimented by moderate to full malt flavor and
sweetness. Caramel and malty notes overshadow the moderate
hop aroma. Silver Medal Winner at the 2010 Great American Beer
Festival!
□□
Schell’s Pils [ 5.5% ABV | 35 IBU’s ]
Medium straw color. Rich to moderate body balanced by a clean
moderate hop bitterness. Moderate flowery hop aroma.
□□
Grain Belt Nordeast [ 4.7 % ABV | 17 IBU’s ]
Grain Belt Nordeast is an American Amber lager and is the newest
member to the Grain Belt Family. It has a light maltiness and hop
aroma with a mild bitterness. Smooth taste with an excellent
drinkability.
Avery Brewing Co. - #23
Boulder, CO | www.averybrewing.com
Since 1993 our brewery has been committed to producing eccentric ales and lagers that defy styles or categories. Our
products are thoroughly American at heart: blending Old World tradition and expertise with ingenuity, creativity and
boldness. We are dedicated to making beer from the inside out: we brew what we like to drink--with utter disregard for
what the market demands-- and search out fans with equally eccentric palates. If you think your taste buds can keep
up with our brews, we invite you to check out our entire lineup of more than twenty different beers.
Brewmaster: Adam Avery | Head Brewer: Steve Breezley
□□
Ellie’s Brown Ale
This beautiful, deep russet brew has the sweet and somewhat nutty
character of Adam Avery’s late (1992-2002) Chocolate Lab, for which
it is named. Crystal and chocolate malts give this beer a brown sugar
maltiness with hints of vanilla and nuts, while subtle hopping gives it
an overall drinkability that’s second to none, just like Ellie!
Notes -
□□
Czar Imperial Stout
Behold the stunning crimson hues through the inky blackness. Inhale
the noble Hallertau hops, spicy and floral. Savor the flavors redolent
of English toffee, rich mocha, sweet molasses, candied currants and a
hint of anise. We highly recommend cellaring additional bottles, as the
Czar will continue to mature and become denser and more complex
with age.
Barley John’s Brew Pub - #2
Brewmaster: John Moore* | Head Brewer: Colin Mullen*
□□
Little Barley Bitter [ 3.5% ABV | 18 IBU’s ]
Modeled after the British style “Bitter”, this is the lightest and least
bitter beer we brew. Crisp and refreshing with just a hint of hops.
□□
Stockyard IPA [ 6.8 % ABV | 50 IBU’s ]
Elevated hop and alcohol levels present a wonderfully complex Britishstyle
IPA. A more subtle presentation of hops is balanced with a toasty
malt sweetness.
□□
Wild Brunette [ 7.2 % ABV | 50 IBU’s ]
Our signature ale! Brewed with MN grown Wild Rice and hopped with
Willamette hops, this brown ale has ties to the American-style brown,
but the vanilla nuttiness of the Wild Rice make it unique to us.
□□
Old 8 Porter [ 8.0 % ABV | 55 IBU’s ]
Rich, dark and roasty - our ideal version of a Porter. Roasted malts
balance the body with subtle smoky overtones.
□□
Oktoberfest [ 8.2 % ABV | 22 IBU’s ]
Brewed using German Vienna & Munich Malts using the traditional
double-decoction brewing style. Fermented with a lager yeast blend
and aged for 4 mo. in our cellar. Fiery orange hues with a malt
emphasis and a gentle presentation of Hallertau hops.
□□
O.P.A. [ 5.1 % ABV | 45 IBU’s ]
Oatmeal Pale Ale. American style pale ale brewed using generous
amounts of flaked Oats and enhanced with generous amounts of
Amarillo & Simcoe hops. Malt smoothness from the Oats and citrus
aggressiveness from the hops.
□□
Extra Stout w/ Coffee (cask) [ 7 % ABV ]
Cask Conditioned Stout. This stout lies in between a standard style
and Imperial Stout. Heavy use of Roasted Barley in the mash and
aged with split coffee beans in the cask.
Bell’s Brewery, Inc. - #39
Kalamazoo, MI | www.bellsbeer.com
Bell’s Brewery, Inc. formerly Kalamazoo Brewing Company, founded by Larry Bell as a home-brewing supply shop in
1983, sold its first beer in 1985. Originally brewing in a 15-gallon soup kettle, the company has grown remarkably from
its production of 135 barrels in 1986 to over 125,000 barrels in 2009. Bell’s Brewery has grown from a tiny operation
renting part of a former plumbing supply warehouse to a bustling, regional craft brewery. Over twenty years of brewing,
Bell’s Brewery has built a nationwide reputation as a creative and talented brewery, playing a significant role in changing
the beer-scape of the nation.
Brewmaster: Larry Bell*
□□
Expedition Stout - Cask
One of the earliest examples of the Russian Imperial Stout in the
United States, Expedition Stout offers immensely complex flavors
crafted specifically with vintage aging in mind, as its profile will
continue to mature and develop over the years. A huge malt body is
matched to a heady blend of chocolate, dark fruits, and other aromas.
Intensely bitter in its early months, the flavors will slowly meld and
grow in depth as the beer ages.
□□
Le Battuer
The first in a three-part series of interpretations on the French Biere
de Garde style, Le Batteur leads with a distinctive yeast aromatic
character mixed with light bready notes. Noticeably dry, the finish is
crisp with a mild, refreshing acidity. The French term for a drummer, Le
Batteur takes its name from a component of a classic jazz trio.
Le Pianiste
The second in the series, Le Pianiste starts as a malt forward beer,
combining biscuity, breadcrust notes with a light caramel flavor.
Noticeably dry, the finish is crisp with a lively, refreshing acidity.
□□
Le Contrbassiste
As the final & boldest in the series, Le Contrebassiste blends roasted
& lightly smoked malts and is fermented with a special French ale
yeast which lends its own distinctive aromatic notes. The beer’s
namesake, The Double Bass is reflected in the deep, rich flavors that
resonate in this unique offering.
Hopslam
Starting with six different hop varietals added to the brew kettle &
culminating with a massive dry-hop addition of Simcoe hops, Bell’s
Hopslam Ale possesses the most complex hopping schedule in the
Bell’s repertoire. Selected specifically because of their aromatic
qualities, these Pacific Northwest varieties contribute a pungent
blend of grapefruit, stone fruit, and floral notes. A generous malt
bill and a solid dollop of honey provide just enough body to keep the
balance in check, resulting in a remarkably drinkable rendition of the
Double India Pale Ale style.
□□
The Oracle
Our take on the West Coast-style Double India Pale Ale, The Oracle
places hop intensity first & foremost, making only the slightest
concession to malt & balance. The fireworks start with the floral
aromatic punch of two separate dry-hop sessions with Amarillo and
NZ Pacific Jade. Resinous, citrusy hop flavors mixed with aggressive
bitterness from a massive kettle addition deliver on that aromatic
promise.
Boston Beer Co. - #33
Boston, MA | www.samueladams.com
The Boston Beer Company began in 1984 with a generations-old family recipe that Founder and Brewer Jim Koch uncovered
in his father’s attic. After bringing the recipe to life in his kitchen, Jim brought it to bars in Boston with the belief
that drinkers would appreciate a complex, full-flavored beer, brewed fresh in America. That beer was Samuel Adams
Boston Lager®, and it helped catalyze what became known as the American craft beer revolution. Today, the Company
brews more than 31 styles of beer and uses the traditional four vessel brewing process and often takes extra steps
like dry-hopping and a secondary fermentation known as krausening. It passionately pursues the development of new
styles and the perfection of its classic beers by constantly searching for the world’s finest ingredients. While Samuel
Adams is the country’s largest-selling craft beer, it accounts for just under one percent of the U.S. beer market. For more
Brau Brothers Brewing Co. - #4
Lucan, MN | www.braubrothersbrewing.com | ** MN GUILD MEMBER **
Brau Brothers Brewing Co, LLC is located in the tiny town of Lucan, Minnesota. Tucked in the southwest part of the
state, we have worked to restore the rich tradition of the small town brewery. Established in the spring of 1998, the
brewery began as a brew pub on Main Street. We then spent the next eight years honing our brewing skills, building
recipes, and collecting feedback. In 2006 the brewery moved to a six acre brewery complex on the edge of town. Today
the brewery is surrounded by the state’s first commercial hop yard. Spanning three acres, we currently grow eleven
different varieties of hops which are used for many of our beers. We also grow our own malting barley, which is malted
on-site and mashed within sight of the barley field.
Ring Neck Braun Ale
Ring Neck Braun Ale was the first seasonal brewed by Brau Bros. A
perfect autumn ale, this big double nut brown ale is dry and fruity, yet
surprisingly drinkable. Nutty flavor is derived from both biscuit malt
and toasted oats. A hint of raspberry and classic British hops round
out this mild and complex brown ale.
□□
Hundred Yard Dash - Fresh Hop Ale
Bunches and bunches of wet hops are added at first wort, through the
brewing process, and finally at conditioning through dry-hopping.
Brau Bros’ boasts the state’s largest hopyard, with eleven varieties
spread out over the eastern acreage. Harvested only minutes before
use, multiple varieties contribute a complex blend of hop bitterness,
flavor, and aroma. Our unique soil and terrain produce unequaled hops
and contribute to a one-of-a-kind ale. Notes of grass, herbs, and green
tea are evident and are indicative of truly authentic wet hopped beer.
We preview darker October beers by incorporating Vienna Malt along
with premium Two Row Pale Malt and tangy Biscuit Malt.
Sheephead Ale, Dry/Fresh Hopped - Cask
Hop heads in southwest Minnesota have long been a growing but
starving population. After numerous requests for a mouth puckering
hoppy beer, we’ve stepped up to the plate with Sheep Head Ale. This
beer is named after our favorite family pastime, sheep head. Hops
dominate with a balance of spicy herbal hops up front followed by the
citrus and grass of American hops. Malt is not forgotten by means
of heavily toasted and chocolate malt. This is a great beer for along
winter session of card playing with family.
Rubus Black - Cask
Rubus Black, Blackberry Imperial Porter is classic in terms of
ingredients, yet takes flavor to the edge of porter. Chocolate Malt
dominates, with a high percentage of various roasted and toasted
malts building a nutty, milk chocolate profile. Fuggle and Golding
hops play a supporting role; both edge the south side of the brewery’s
Estate Hopyard. A measured infusion of blackberry will contribute
complex dark cherry and black currant nuance. Traditional British
yeast allows the fruit to stay in the forefront.
Rubus Black, French Roast - Cask
Regal Pilsner
Regal Pilsner has been available in very limited markets in draft form
for two months, but today’s availability of 6-packs will extend its
reach to liquor stores and restaurants in additional geographies. Regal
Pilsner is a double pilsner that, while brewed similar to a traditional
Bohemian pilsner, is produced with American Sterling and Magnum
hops, giving the beer an American craft beer flair with a hoppy finish.
Brewery Director and Brewmaster, Todd Usry, says, “We chose Sterling
hops for its floral aroma over the spiciness of Saaz hops traditionally
used in pilsners. The Magnum hops finish the beer with a clean
mouthfeel.” At 7% ABV (alcohol by volume), Regal Pilsner is full, yet
soft in traditional pilsner style.
Miner Mishaps [ 5.0 % ABV ]
Miner Mishaps is our traditional German Schwarzbier, also know
as “Black Pilsner” or simply “Black Lager.” Our traditional version
was formulated by our friend William Scott (or Scotty as he’s known
around the brewery), an award-winning homebrewer and certified beer
judge who has always been very generous about sharing his creations
and his seemingly unlimited knowledge of beer. It seemed only fitting
that since we started out as a homebrewery, we would try and recreate
one of Scotty’s homebrews (which are typically 5 to 10 gallon batched)
here in out 15 barrel (465 gallon) brewhouse. Brewed almost entirely
with malt imported from Weyermann Specialty Malts in Bamberg,
Germany and hopped with imported German Perle and Hallertaur
Mittlefreu hops, Miner Mishap is truly a one-of-a-kind original.
Classically refined, but not styled as a traditional “sweet beer” beer alternative, Crispin ciders are crisp and clean,
barley feedeth, not taketh from the mouths of man. A non-filtered view of hard work, careful perseverance of expansion,
sticking to what is believed to be the right way and the only way to stay true to high quality, and also, the vague understandings
of possible humor; blurring his family’s, employees’ and customers’ drinking experience and vision between
a no-bullshit approach to brewing big, outstanding beers and selling nonsensical imagery and haberdashery…Proven to
the masses as a Darkhorse trademark for the man behind the reigns. Go out and buy a six-pack, and read the holder
the beer comes in. Read the back of your growler. When you’re done, you’ll either get it or you won’t. No matter, as you’re
drinking some of the best fuckin’ beer made in the great state of Michigan. Period!
Crooked Tree I.P.A. [ 6.0 % ABV | 60 IBU’s ]
Inspired by West Coast I.P.A.’s, but brewed with Michigan style. The
Crooked Tree is heavily dry hopped to give it a big aroma of pine
and citrus. The flavors are big, yet very balanced between fresh hops
and malt. Often described as “grapefruit” our hops give this beer an
excellent fruit flavor that finishes dry, crisp, and clean. It will pour a
nice deep copper color with a bit of haziness. Because of our almost
patented “Intense Transfer Methods” our Crooked Tree has won
several medals in the India Pale Ale category.
□□
Plead the 5th Imperial Stout [ 11 % ABV | 40 IBU’s ]
It’s big and full bodied with lots of roasted malts and balanced with
heavy hops to put this imperial in a league of its own.
□□
Amber Ale [ 5.5 % ABV | 14.5 IBU’s ]
Let us introduce the “red headed step child” of our beer portfolio. This
beer is commonly over looked and is a true Ninja of a beer. While the
malt and hops give this beer an amazing copper color, medium body,
and a smooth mouth feel, it’s the yeast that sets this one apart from
other amber ales. Inspired by almost everything from Belgium (beer,
women, mussels) we thought it would be cool to give our Amber a
little Belgian love. So we used a yeast that is ALMOST like a Belgian
yeast strain. You’ll notice it in the aroma but mostly in the flavor.
Mild hints of light fruit and clove are present at the very end of the
sip, just enough to keep you coming back for another sip.
Double Crooked Tree I.P.A. [ 13.6 % ABV | 90 IBU’s ]
(Randallized with Cascade hops and fresh Orange Peels!) Have you
read the description for the regular Crooked Tree yet? Well this beer
is almost the same just double the flavor and alcohol. We actually
took the Crooked Tree recipe and doubled all of the ingredients except
the water, just the way a DOUBLE should be made. Big hops balanced
with tons of malt give this beer a huge body. Although this beer is
as cool as “The Fonz” when first purchased, it gets really mellow
and smooth with some age. After a year or two stored in a cool dark
place you’ll notice the heavy caramel and malt flavors are trying to
sneak past the hops. This beer is hugely delicious so it will need your
undivided attention (the chores can wait....trust us).
Grand Rapids, MI | www.foundersbrewing.com
Founded in 1997, Founders Brewing Company has grown around this simple philosophy: “We don’t brew beer for the
masses. Instead, our beers are crafted for a chosen few, a small cadre of renegades and rebels who enjoy a beer that
pushes the limits of what is commonly accepted as taste. In short, we make beer for people like us.” In 2010, Ratebeer.
Fox Barrel Cider - #69
Colfax, CA| www.foxbarrel.com
After looking throughout the Sierra Foothills, the pair chose a location in the historic railroad town of Colfax, California.
The cidery originally sat in the historic Fruit Growers Exchange Association, a building that once was a storage and
packing facility for the abundance of fruits grown in the area. It seemed appropriate to use this space, bringing it back
towards its original use. After two years in that location, the cidery outgrew the space and moved to a much larger
facility less than a mile down the road. The new facility houses both the production and the newly opened tasting room.
Grand Teton Brewing Co. - #74
Victor, ID | www.grantetonbrewing.com
Grand Teton Brewing Company was founded in 1988 as the first modern “micro” brewery in the state of Wyoming. The
brewery was built on the belief that great tasting, preservative free, authentic hand-crafted beer could find a niche in the
modern market place. The original 210 square foot brewery in Wilson, WY quickly became a local favorite. Today, Grand
Teton Brewing Company, now located in Victor, Idaho, is in the top 100 craft breweries in North America. Premium microbrews
include the 6-time gold-medal-winning Bitch Creek ESB, gold-medal winning Sweetgrass APA, Howling Wolf
Weisse Bier and the favorites of the Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks, Old Faithful Ale (pale golden) and
Teton Ale (amber). Grand Teton Brewing Company beers are hand-crafted from only the finest ingredients, including
locally-grown grains and pure Teton mountain spring water.
□□
Bitch Creek ESB [ 6.0 % ABV | 54 IBU’s ]
Bitch Creek Extra Special Bitter perfectly balances big malt sweetness
and robust hop flavor for a full-bodied, satisfying mahogany ale. Like
the fly fishing and kayaking stream for which it is named, our Bitch
Creek ESB is full of character and definitely not for the timid.
□□
Sweetgrass APA [ 6.0 % ABV | 60 IBU’s ]
Sweetgrass is an American Pale Ale of distinction! 2009 Great
American Beer Festival Gold Medal winner in the American Pale Ale
category, this crisp and fragrant beer is hopped and dry-hopped with
plenty of Amarillos and Cascades. Try it with any bold, flavorful food
to complement its citrusy, resinous spiciness.
□□
Oaked Lost Continent DIPA [ 8.0 % ABV | 90 IBU’s ]
Lost Continent is brewed with over three pounds of American Pacific
Northwest hops per barrel in the kettle and dry hopped twice after
fermentation. The result is fruity, floral, and complex, with notes of
tangerine zest and fresh-squeezed grapefruit juice. This version is
aged in oak barrels!
□□
Trout Hop Black IPA [ 8.5 % ABV | 145 IBU’s ]
A spicy and bold American-Style India Black Ale, with notes of fresh
pine needles and spruce tips. Brewed with Idaho 2-Row Brewers’
Malt and German specialty malts, this ale has a deep rich color
and roasted finish but does not have the thick and rich body that
often accompanies malty brews. Kettle hopped and dry hopped with
Pacific Northwest hops, the resulting bitterness is bold and intense,
the aroma piney and zesty. The full body and dry finish create a
refreshing autumn ale, perfect for any crisp afternoon or cool evening.
The spicy hops of this ale complement bold, flavorful foods. Malts:
Idaho 2-Row Brewers, Carafa Special, CaraMunich, Melanoidin.
Hops: Chinook, Columbus, Cascade & Nugget
Fuel Cafe Stout
Coffee aromas dominate the nose, with a background of roasted grain.
The fine balance of mild hops, the gentle acidity of choice coffee and
the full mouth feel from roasted malt barley make this an unforgettable
brew.
□□
Lakefront IPA
Pours a hazy orange with a rocky white head that lasts, and leaves soft
lace on your glass as you sip this refreshing beer. American Cascade
and Chinook hops dominate the aroma, yielding a citrusy, floral
bouquet. The hops give a nice bitter bite to the flavor, but this beer is
surprisingly well balanced with a full body and smooth malty flavor
to back up the hops. It finishes smooth and crisp with a lingering hop
flavor reminiscent of fresh ruby red grapefruit.
□□
Fixed Gear
Inspired by the energy and audacity of the fixed gear courier,
Lakefront Brewery ran smack into this arresting creation. Fixed Gear
is a big, bold American red ale. It pours a glaring crimson tone with
a rocky white head and a brilliant floral-citrus aroma, thanks to
an aggressive dry hopping. Its immodest, malty spine and intrepid
caramel flavors blow in via gratuitous amounts of 2-row pale and
dark caramel malts. A balanced citrus bite comes from Chinook and
Cascade hops followed shortly by mild, fruity esters from the ale
yeast. Weighing in at a mean 6.5% ABV and 34 IBU’s, this one’s got
an attitude.
Leech Lake Brewing Co. - #22
Walker, MN | www.leechlakebrewing.com
Leech Lake Brewing Company was founded in April 2010. Located in Walker, MN, within the woods of Chippewa National
Forest, we operate more of a nanobrewery than microbrewery in that our kettle capacity is only sufficient for a
58-gallon batch. We triple-batch-brew each brew day in order to fill two 3-barrel primary fermenters from which we
rack to one of our 7-barrel secondary fermenters. Leech Lake Brewing specializes in keg- & bottle-conditioned Britishstyle
ales, including a Scottish, Pale, ESB, Robust Porter, and Imperial IPA. Our tap room is open for samples and to
purchase growlers and logoed merchandise. Leech Lake Brewing Company… A lake of beer, handcrafted one small batch
Loch Leech Monster Scottish Ale [ 6.5 % ABV ]
It exists, it’s friendly, and it definitely doesn’t suck… unless it’s offered
a straw. A blend of Golden Promise, Brown, Dextrin and Black Patent
Malts, along with a bit of Roasted Barley, gives those searching for
the extraordinary cause for obsession. Fuggle hops tame the malty
monster (30 IBUs), and bottle-conditioning refines its character,
making it a suitable guest at any get-together.
□□
Blindside Pale Ale [ 6.5 % ABV ]
Just ask a wakeboarder… tasty trick, smooth landing. This wellbalanced
beer acquires its stamina from 2-row Pale and light and
medium Crystal Malts. It attains its fearlessness from generous
amounts of Fuggle hops that are added to both the kettle and the
fermenter (60 IBUs). Bottle-conditioning provides ballast for the
perfect wake of carbonation and mouth feel. Now… “Hit it!”
++ Watch Brewmaster Greg Smith take part in the 1:15 New Brewers Panel!
□□
Minobii ESB [ 7.5 % ABV ]
Minobii is Ojibwe for “Drink and be merry!” This Extra-Special
Bitter is all about good times. 2-row Pale, medium Crystal and
Dextrin Malts, Flaked Maize and Dark Brown Sugar groove to the
beats in the brewhouse. The Fuggle hops take the party into both the
kettle and fermenter (60 IBUs). On the bottle-conditioned stage, the
Yeast band plays live where they kick out mellow CO2 vibes. Can
you dig it?
□□
Driven Snow Porter [ 6.5 % ABV ]
Purely… delicious. As alluring as freshly-fallen powder and as
smooth as hard-pack, the velvety mouth feel and deep flavor are
derived from 2-row Pale, Black Patent, Dextrin, Chocolate and dark
Crystal Malts, Roasted Barley and Molasses. Fuggle hops act as the
snow hook that anchors this big dog (60 IBUs), a bottle-conditioned
brew that could very well leave a musher believing it fell straight from
Heaven.
□□
Milk Stout [ 5.9 % ABV ]
Roasted malt and coffee flavors build the foundation of this sweet
stout. This English style of beer, also known as Sweet Stout or Cream
Stout, first appeared in London in the late 1800’s. The early brewers
touted the health benefits of the milk sugar in this beer which today
adds a well rounded sweetness to this dark beer and makes it an
outstanding, year ‘round stout.
□□
Sawtooth Ale [ 4.8 % ABV ]
Sawtooth Ale is an English style Extra Special Bitter. It is an extremely
well balanced beer, with significant hop character, medium body,
and a maltiness which increases in evidence as the beer warms to
its “proper” drinking temperature. . The water used is quite hard,
bringing it to near Burton on Trent levels, keeping it true to the style.
This gives it the appropriate character and improves the malt extract
significantly. This amber ale is the perfect balance between malt and
hops. A great session beer.
□□
400 Pound Monkey [ 6.6 % ABV ]
Why does the world need another IPA? Because this one ain’t like
them others. Using hops of a different color, earthy and herbal, it’s
well balanced by bready malt. The result? An English-style IPA that
separates itself from the ubiquitous bunch. Initial malt sweetness
followed by earthy, straw and herbal hop notes. Finishes dry with a
pleasant lingering bitterness and distinctly British hop character.
Left Hand’s newest beer!
A beer cloaked in secrecy. An ale whose mysterious and unusual
palate will swirl across your tongue and ask more questions than it
answers. A sort of dry, crisp, refreshing, not-quite pale ale. #9 is really
impossible to describe because there’s never been anything else quite
like it. Our secret ingredient introduces a most unusual aroma which
is balanced with residual sweetness.
Mantorville Brewing Co. - #53
Mantorville, MN | www.mantorvillebeer.com
History: The Mantorville Brewery was founded in 1858 as the Dodge County Brewery by John Herschi. One year later
the brewery was purchased by Peter Ginsburg, who in 1864 built a larger facility in Mantorville, at the east end of Main
Street on Brewery Creek. Like many of the pioneer breweries of the bluff country, it served the local immigrant farmers
in the area. The brewery continued under successive owners until 1939 when it closed and its copper kettle was scrapped
for the war effort. In 1996 the Mantorville Brewery was once again reborn through the efforts of six local home brewers.
Introduced that year was Stagecoach Amber Ale, named for the famous Stagecoach Saloon, located in the Historic Hubbell
House. In 1999 Tod Fyten became a partner in the brewery and 2002 he purchased the brewery from his remaining
partners. Today the brewery is expanding its draft production and is celebrating the 14th year in business with the
release of it’s Golden and Smoked Porter in 6 packs, joining the Stagecoach Amber Ale 6 packs at local area stores.
Brewmaster: Tod Fyten*
□□
Stagecoach Amber
A traditional amber ale and the brewery’s flagship brew. The ale is made
with five varieties of premium malts. Brewed with generous amounts
of Pacific Northwest hops, the ale has a classic fruity beginning with
a hoppy finish.
□□
Stagecoach Golden Ale
A traditional golden ale, and the brewery’s second brew. This brew is
made with four varieties of premium malts to give a clean, smooth
flavor. Brewed with generous amounts of noble hops, honey malts are
added to balance the hop bitterness and to bring a touch of sweetness
to the finish.
□□
Stagecoach Smoked Porter
Made in the tradition of the smoked beers of Europe. Ingredients
used in this unique creamy dark beer include smoked and chocolate
malts that combine for a subtle licorice like flavor and with chocolate
overtones.
sweetness resulting in a very enjoyable session beer.
Tripel Trouble [ 8.5 % ABV ]
Brewed with over 900 pounds of the highest quality Belgian malts
contributes a “rummy” flavor to the beer. A Belgian monastery ale
yeast gives this beer a fruity/spicy complexity while maintaining
drinkability despite it’s strength. Hints of honey, caramel, light fruits
and a subtle spiciness are experienced in it’s flavor.
□□
Sol [ 4.0 % ABV ]
exotic coriander to contribute a citrusy zest to it’s flavor. Brewed with
Minhas Craft Brewery - #73
Monroe, WI | www.minhasbrewery.com
The Minhas Craft Brewery has had a long and storied past. Since its construction in 1845, it has passed through many
hands; notably Adam and Fred Blumer and Joseph and Fred Huber. In 2003, the brewery started contract brewing for
Ravinder Minhas (at the age of 21) for export to Alberta, Canada. He then invested capital to increase the brewery’s
production capabilities and increased volume by five times. In 2005, the beer exported to Canada was 85% of the brewery
business. October 3, 2006, the Minhas family purchased 100% interest in the brewery and now own and operate
a no-debt business.
New Belgium Brewing Co. - #57
Fort Collins, CO | www.newbelgium.com
New Belgium Brewing Company, makers of Fat Tire Amber Ale and a host of Belgian-inspired beers, is considered a
leader in sustainable business practices in the craft beer industry. New Belgium became the first brewery in America to
subscribe to wind energy for its electrical needs in 1998. The brewery currently produces 15% of its electricity on site
by harvesting methane from its process water treatment facility to fire a co-generation engine. New Belgium recently
installed the largest private solar array in Colorado at 200kW and it has one of the lowest water-to-beer production
rates in the industry.
New Belgium is recognized as one of Outside Magazine’s Best Places to Work and one of the Wall Street Journal’s Best
Small Businesses. The Colorado brewer is a Platinum-level Bicycle Friendly Business as designated by the League of
American Bicyclists, and one of World Blu’s most democratic U.S. businesses. In addition to Fat Tire, New Belgium
brews seven year round beers; Ranger IPA, Mothership Wit, Sunshine Wheat, 1554 Black Ale, Blue Paddle Pilsener, Abbey
Belgian Ale and Trippel. Learn more at www.newbelgium.com
Fat Tire [ 5.2% ABV | 19 IBU’s ]
Like the ageless delight of pedaling a bicycle, Fat Tire Amber Ale’s
appeal is in its feat of balance: Toasty malt flavors (sorta like biscuits
just pulled from the oven) coasting in equilibrium with crisp hoppiness.
Delicious stability - in the world of sometimes-precarious beer flavors
–is perhaps what prompted one consumer who wrote us to say, “this
beer just makes you smile.” Fat Tire’s depth of flavor, achieved with
neither a disproportionate sway toward hops or malts, tandems well
with a full spectrum of today’s engaging cuisines. Salmon, dry-aged
cheeses, roasted chilies, omelets at midnight, sweet potato French fries
and just about anything with grill marks or garlic are just a few of
the edibles we like to partner up with our Amber Ale. Fat Tire is so
named for the bike trip Jeff took through Belgium that greatly inspired
his homebrewing efforts
□□
Ranger IPA [ 6.5% ABV | 70 IBU’s ]
New Belgium’s foray into the true American India Pale Ales. Bring out
the hops! This clear amber beauty bursts at the starting gate with
an abundance of hops: Cascade (citrus), Chinook (floral/citrus), and
Simcoe (fruity) lead off the beer, with Cascade added again for an
intense dry hop flavor. Brewed with pale and dark caramel malts that
harmonize the hop flavor from start to finish, Ranger is a sessionable
splendor for all you hopinistas. Thank your Beer Ranger!
1554 [ 5.6% ABV | 21 IBU’s ]
Born of a flood and centuries-old Belgian text, 1554 Enlightened
Black Ale uses a light lager yeast strain and dark chocolaty malts to
redefine what dark beer can be. In 1997, a Fort Collins flood destroyed
the original recipe our researcher, Phil Benstein, found in the library.
So Phil and brewmaster, Peter Bouckaert, traveled to Belgium to
retrieve this unique style lost to the ages. Their first challenge was
deciphering antiquated script and outdated units of measurement,
but trial and error (and many months of in-house sampling)
culminated in 1554, a highly quaffable dark beer with a moderate
body and mouthfeel.
Notes -
□□
Lips of Faith – Sahti [ 7.2% ABV ]
Inspired by Finnish Sahti, a traditional rye ale brewed with juniper,
our Sahti Ale is a hazy amber ale with a sturdy mouthfeel and a crisp
and lively “finnish”. Brewed with Pale, Crystal, rye malts and whole
oats, our version is bittered with Cascade and finished with Cascade
and Amarillo hops. Juniper boughs are added to the mash and juniper
berries, orange and lemon peel are pitched in the whirlpool creating a
festive olfactory of citrus and juniper notes.
Dragons Milk [ 9.0% ABV ]
Dragon’s Milk is a 17th century term used to describe the strong beer
usually reserved for royalty. This strong ale was aged in oak for over
120 days. The aging process extracts flavors from the wood, which
contribute to its complex character. Hints of bourbon flavor perfectly
compliment its roasted malts to produce a beer fit for a King.
Fort Collins, CO | www.odellbrewing.com
Doug, Wynne and Corkie Odell started their brewing odyssey in 1989 in a converted 1915 grain elevator located on the
outskirts of downtown Fort Collins. Odell’s was just the second microbrewery to open in Colorado. No one knew what
“craft beer” was in those early days of the industry and we had to educate our first customers on what exactly it was
we were trying to sell them. Not home brew, or worse, bathtub brew, but small batch, hand-crafted, commercially brewed
distinctive beers. Our success was immediate.
Today we’re 57 co-workers strong and still dedicated to sharing our passion for delicious beer with our ever-growing
family of fans. Experimentation with beer recipes, barrel aging and yeast cultivation coupled with our dedication to our
customers and each other keep our creative juices flowing and our reputation for excellent, innovative beers growing.
Rogue Ales - #66
Newport, OR | www.rogue.com
Jack Joyce, Bob Woodell (past U of O fraternity brothers), and another friend, Rob Strasser, were approached by Jeff
Schultz, Bob’s accountant, and an avid home brewer. Construction began on a brewpub in June of 1988 in Ashland along
a very scenic little stream called Lithia Creek. The Pub opened in May of 1989, with a small but enthusiastic customer
base, made up of curious locals who dropped by to see what was going on and never left. Many joined in and helped with
the construction and other projects as needed. The names of many of these early customers have been immortalized
with brass plaques that grace the bar today. One of the most notable of these future customers was Chuck Linquist.
He was retired, was a home brewer, and had an interest in microbrews. He was also bored and wanted to do something
useful. We consider him one of our first employees. His handiwork is still visible at the Pub, the shelves that line the
bar area, the light sconces, as well as the memorabilia on the shelf above Mo’s picture, that Chuck brought back from
Europe. So begins the story of Rogue Ales, enjoy!
Rush River Brewing Co. - #21
River Falls, WI | www.rushriverbeer.com
Rush River beers are handmade in River Falls, WI by locals for locals. All of our beers are UNFILTERED and UNPAS-
TEURIZED which gives them more flavor, a robust mouthfeel as well as many health benefits. They are meant for local
consumption only, as they are a fresh product. As such, they need to be refrigerated to stay at peak flavor. We use no
additives or finings in our products. Each keg and every bottle retains residual amounts of yeast that will settle out if
left undisturbed and cold. This yeast can be mixed back into the beer with agitation and will eventually re-settle on the
bottom. Our yeast strains are custom made for us in Oregon, and all of our barley, wheat and hops are American grown.
We currently offer five full-time beers, and will occasionally brew seasonals for fun.
Small Axe Golden Ale [ 4.5% ABV ]
Originally a summer seasonal offering, the Small Axe has graduated
The Unforgiven Amber [ 5.5% ABV ]
Rich in flavor and mildly sweet, this amber ale is dry-hopped in the
Shiner Beers - #64
Shiner, TX | www.shiner.com
From it’s earliest time under the Shiner Brewing Association in 1909, to that fateful day in 1914 when Kosmos Speotzl
saw an opportunity to bring classing Bavarian brewing traditions to his fellow immigrants, through the “Great Experimant”
of Prohibition and Great Depression, the “Little Brewery” has stuck to what they know best – handcrafting the
finest beers. There’s nothing Finer than a Shiner!
Bock reflects the tradition of genuine Bavarian beers as a brew only
a craftsman like Kosmos Spoetzl, trained in the “Old Country,” could
bring to life. With its deep amber color, distinctive rich flavor and full
body, Shiner Bock demonstrates the care of a handcrafted brewing
process to bring forth a mellow taste free of the bitter aftertaste found
in many micro, specialty and imported beers. Just think of it as Shiner
smooth.
Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. - #38
Chico, CA | www.sierranevada.com
In 1979, Ken Grossman began building a small brewery in the town of Chico, California. His goal: to brew exceptional
ales and lagers using traditional methods, redefining them by showcasing the aromatics and spiciness of whole-cone
hops. Today, the Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. is considered the premier craft brewery in the United States. And the beer?
Critics proclaim it “Among the best brewed anywhere in the world.” 2010 marks the 30th Anniversary of Sierra Nevada
Sierra Nevada Pale Ale [ 5.6% ABV | 38 IBU’s ]
Pale ale is a delightful example of the classic pale ale style. It has a
use of the best Cascade hops.
Sierra Nevada Torpedo Extra IPA
At Sierra Nevada we take hops seriously, so our Extra IPA had to
have the boldest hop flavors and aromas possible. After years of
experimentation, we developed something we call the Hop Torpedo: a
revolution in dry hopping and an invention designed to harness all of
the inviting complexity that whole-cone hops have to offer. Sierra
Nevada Torpedo Ale is a big American IPA: bold, assertive and full of
flavor and aromas highlighting the complex citrus, pine and herbal
character of whole-cone American hops. [ 7.2% ABV | 65 IBU’s ]
Sierra Nevada Kellerweis [ 4.8% ABV | 15 IBU’s ]
After years of experimentation and an epic tour through the legendary
wheat-beer breweries of Germany, we decided to brew Kellerweis
using the traditional Bavarian style of open fermentation. This
difficult and labor intensive technique adds uncommon depth and
flavor complexity. Our hazy-golden hefeweizen is deeply flavorful,
refreshing, and perfect for a sunny day. Kellerweis is deeply complex,
with flavors reminiscent of ripe banana and spicy clove. This hazygolden
beer glows with suspended years creating a velvety texture.
Nut Brown Ale [ 5.0-5.5% ABV ]
Don’t be intimidated by the rich walnut color. This beer is really
not heavy at all. It is very smooth with no bitterness, and has a real
warming, nut-like flavor and aroma. Brewed to match a traditional
English mild, it has carbonation levels that are more American. Our
“flagship” brew, it’s a very social drink and goes great with all types
of food.
□□
Rhoades’ Scholar Stout [ 5.9-6.8% ABV ]
Our only named beer to date. Its’ honorary status is in tribute to its’
designer, Allen Rhoades, a fellow brewer who captured a blue ribbon
at the Western Washington State Fair when it was entered as a
homebrew. It’s everything a stout should be. Rich and hearty, not thick
and overpowering, comes complete with a creamy head. Chocolate
and crystal malts along with roasted barley combine to create the
wonderful flavor
□□
Applefest Ale [ 6.25% ABV ]
A seasonal beer with very special significance. This beer honors
those diligent folks that call the Bayfield peninsula their home.
Especially those who have chosen an agricultural way of life. It’
production is reserved for the time of harvest and showcases the
pride these people have in one’s accomplishments. It also only comes
out once a year. Inspired by Bayfield’s renowned Applefest, which
is celebrated with extraordinary fanfare, the South Shore Brewery
shares in the moment through this brew. Combining the flavors and
aromas of locally produced honey, apple cider and specialty malts, we
have produced one of the most unique products to be sure. Because of
the generous amounts of honey, the special maturation process with
the apple cider and the unique flavors of malt, this brew is indefinable
in conventional beer terms. It has characteristics of beer, mead and
champagne.
Altbier [ 4.8% ABV ]
This German lagered ale finds its roots in the northern confines of the
country, particularly in the city of Düsseldorf. A richly copper colored
beer, with a good malt presence, and discernible hop character. The
word “alt” means “old” in German, referring to the method in which
the beer is made. Before the discovery and isolation of yeast strains,
German brewers uniquely fermented and cellared their beers at cold
temperatures. The finished product if affected with less fruity smells
and flavors, and a simple, crisp dry finish. The hops, Perle (pronounced
Pearl) and yeast used in this recipe are decisively German. Much like
a mixture of an ESB and Oktoberfest.
□□
Northern Lights Ale [ 4.3% ABV ]
“Ale Brewed With Herbs”. The South Shore Brewery continues it’s
dedication to innovative and progressive beer styles. As a cream
ale it combines the features of a lager ( crisp and smooth) with the
best of an ale (fruity and complex) into one beer. We’ve also added
5 % oatmeal and 16% white wheat for a round, smooth flavor and
mouthfeel. There is a very slight hop presence. Additionally, we’ve
introduced a blend of herbs into the finished product which enlivens
your senses with a unique refreshing taste.
□ □ “Wet Hopped”Bitter Blonde [ 6.6% ABV ]
An uniquely hopped ale which could be regarded as a very pale ESB.
This beer features fresh hand picked ( by us no less) Wisconsin grown
Cascade hops. Hence the term “wet hops”. The more traditional
forms are dried. True to it’s goal of being the ultimate judge of the
ingredients that become South Shore beers, the hops were hand
picked by brewery personnel and brewed with within 48 hours of
picking. The South Shore Brewery takes yet another step towards
it’s goal of exclusive use of regional and locally grown ingredients.
Married with a beer that was formulated from a majority of locally
grown barley, this beer is truly a window into the future. Conditioned
and served via nitrogen a silky, sexy and luscious beer is the only
way to describe how it looks and tastesyour senses with a unique
refreshing taste.
Sprecher Brewing Co. was founded in 1985 by RANDAL SPRECHER, formerly a brewing supervisor at Pabst
Brewing Company, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. From 1985 to 1994, the brewery was located at 730 W. Oregon Street in
Milwaukee’s Walker’s Point area. Through the first ten years the company grew steadily as more and more people
found out about Sprecher’s high quality beers and sodas. Finally, the company had outgrown its original facility and
began looking for a new location to continue its growth. In 1994, Sprecher purchased its current building, located
at 701 W. Glendale Ave., a former elevator car factory. The new, larger brewery enabled the company to continue
growing, and allowed more people to enjoy all of Sprecher’s fine products. At the Sprecher Brewing Co. we are proud
St. Croix Brewing Co. - #53
St. Paul, MN | www.stcroixbeer.com
History: St. Croix Brewery was founded in 1860's by Gerhard Knipps in Stillwater MN. The brewery was located in
north end of Stillwater near the Tamarack House. Like many early pioneer breweries of the valley, it served the local
loggers of the area. As Stillwater grew the St. Croix Brewery sold and its operations ceased in the latter part of the 19th
century. The buildings and land were used for various mercantile interests until the early 1950's when it was razed to
make room for the new Highway 95 realignment. In 1995 the St. Croix Brewing Company was once again reborn by
a local homebrewer and was known as the St. Croix Beer Company. Introduced that year was the American Original
St. Croix Maple Ale. In 2003 Tod Fyten purchased the St. Croix Beer Company and renamed it the St. Croix Brewing
Company, LLC. Currently headquartered in St. Paul, plans are to once again build a brewery in the St. Croix River Valley.
St. Croix Cream Ale
Honoring St. Croix's 10th anniversary, St. Croix Cream Ale celebrates
with an American Original beer style made popular by American
breweries in the 1800's. St. Croix Cream Ale is golden ale made with
three barley malts which produce a creamy but light mouth feel. Some
beer authorities contend that the Cream Ale style is a hybrid of ale and
lager. While this is technically not the case, many find that the flavor
profile and drinkability of St. Croix Cream Ale brings to mind a fine
lager while maintaining the complex layers of flavor that beer drinkers
seek in a craft-brewed ale. Truly an American Original.
□□
St. Croix Creamy Brown Ale
Honoring St. Croix’s 15th anniversary, St. Croix Creamy Brown
borrows from the traditions of the British Brown Ales, using generous
amounts of Cluster hops for bittering and a dose of East Kent
Golding hops for flavor and aroma. European specialty malts provide
a complex flavor profile often missing in the Brown Ale category.
Rounding out the brew is a North American twist, Canadian Honey
Malt, to provide a touch of malt sweetness. While rich and flavorful,
this is the kind of beer you can stay with all night. Pour a Creamy
Brown for yourself and another for a friend.
Brooklyn Center, MN | www.surlybrewing.com | ** MN GUILD MEMBER **
Surly Brewing Company sold their first beer in February of 2006. The idea for Surly originated a couple years before
that. Homebrewer Omar Ansari came up with the idea of opening a brewery after seeing a 3 BBL homebrew set-up in a
magazine. Soon there afterword, Omar met Todd Haug at the Craft Brewers Conference in San Diego. Todd Haug was
the head brewer at the Minneapolis Rock Bottom. They began talking about what type of beers the Twin Cities needed
and what they would want their brewery to be about. The concept was not about extreme beers. The concept was simple,
brew the best beer we could, brew styles that aren’t available here, focus on beer festivals and cask beer. We don’t filter
out the flavor, we use lots of the best ingredients we can find, and we brew beers that we want to drink. And more thing
Todd and I spoke of when putting this brewery together, have a little fun.
forget it, and you definitely won’t forget the way it tastes. Very dark
and very smooth, Buffalo Sweat is a very tasty stout.
Theodore Fyten Brewing Co. - #53
St. Paul, MN | www.fytenburgbeer.com
History: The Theodore Fyten Brewing Company was founded in 1999 in St. Paul, MN, by Tod Fyten II. The roots of the
company however, date back to 1869 when Theodore Fyten immigrated from his native Netherlands to the Upper Levee
neighborhood in St. Paul, MN. Having grown up in the Burgundian province of Limburg, which today is divided between
Belgium, Holland and Germany, beer was an important staple of life as it is still to this day. Moving beer from the brewery
to the public was an important task. The importance of a good draft hitch was key to any brewers success, and there
were none finer for a brewer to own then a Belgian hitch. This said, Theodore, upon arriving began working with local
brewers in St. Paul providing harnesses and horses for their breweries. This tradition carried on thru his son John who
was a leather craftsmen and harness maker, and then to his grandson, George Sr., and great-grandson George Jr. both of
whom were teamsters, with George Jr. working for the Jacob Schmidt Brewing Company. Carrying on the family tradition
Tod began his career at the age of 10 years old making Burgundy and Riesling wines with his father Richard, then continuing
his career in fermentation in college as a campus rep for the Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Company. From there he
would help pioneer the Minnesota craft brewing industry as one of the original brewers at the James Page Brewery and
go on to found one of the nation’s largest consumer beer publications, Midwest, Rocky Mountain and Northwest Beer
Notes. Today the brewery is housed in the horse stables of the Christopher Stahlmann and Jacob Schmidt Brewery, the
same buildings his grandfather George Jr. worked in for Mr. Schmidt many years before.
