Forbes, the legendary first
parish priest of St Mary’s,
Calton; and John Murdoch,
who succeeded Scott as vicar
apostolic of the Western
District.
After his ordination as
priest in 1836, Alexander
Smith served in Greenock and
then Airdrie. His appointment
Bishop Alexander Smith
Conception whose early development
as a Glasgow
founded religious congregation
he helped shape and
Born just under 200 years
ago, on 24 January 1813,
Alexander Smith was among
a notable band of priests who
in the late 18th and early 19th
centuries did so much to advance
the Catholic Church in
Glasgow and the west of
Scotland.
He was from a farming
township in that area of
Moray-shire known as the
Enzie – in many ways the engine-room
of Catholicism at
that time.
Others who hailed from this
north-east stronghold of faith
included Andrew Scott, who
oversaw the building of St
Andrew’s chapel (now catheas
coadjutor vicar apostolic of
the Western District and ordination
as bishop in 1847 coincided
with the arrival of the
first religious sisters in
Glasgow since before the reformation.
Adelaide Vaast and
Veronica Cordier had come to
the disease-ridden city from
their convent in north-east
France to teach the growing
number of Catholic children –
especially girls.
But no one seemed prepared
for their arrival, and they were
on the verge of quitting when
Bishop Smith took them under
his wing. By 1861, when
Bishop Smith died, aged just
48, the Franciscan Sisters had
established a firm footing in
Glasgow and had opened new
convents and schools in
Inverness and Aberdeen, as
well as new branches in
London and Jamaica.
Heartfelt
congratulations
Archbishop Philip
~ May you
be strengthened
to lead the Church
in Glasgow
Archbishop Tartaglia ~ Congratulations
and abundant blessings as you assume
