An international community of missionary priests for Africa. We are called
poverty, hunger and oppression.
WHAT DO WE DO?
Proclaim and live the Gospel with the people of Africa.
Living out my dream every day
INVOLVEMENT within my
home parish of Saint
Peter’s Dumbarton, and
friendship with the
priests, Canon Nicky
Rowan and Father John
Muldoon, meant I began
to entertain the possibility
of becoming a priest
myself.
I thought about it a lot, but
kept it to myself. I bought a
few books that would help me
to pray, as I thought prayer
would help me discern the
way forward.
When I was in sixth year in
Saint Patrick’s High School,
five former pupils were at the
school celebrating their silver
jubilees of priestly ordination.
During the purvey, a group
of us were playing dares and
mine was to approach
Archbishop Winning and ask
him to sign my order of service.
Asked
Bold as brass, I approached
the Archbishop, and, as he
was signing the booklet, he
asked the teacher, whose conversation
with him I had interrupted,
if any of the boys
would make priests.
“Yes”, he said, “John
Campbell.” That was me!
The truth was I had already
made an appointment to speak
to the school chaplain about it,
but I had to run up the road
and tell my parents, who were
gobsmacked, in case they
heard of it from someone else.
By September I was in seminary,
and there I had a ball.
Fr Campbell shortly after his
ordination in 1987 with
pupils of St Peter’s Primary,
Bellsmyre, his old school
I loved the life of the seminary,
especially the study of
theology because it had a clear
application to pastoral life.
And although I wasn’t so
taken with it at the time, I have
come to appreciate the importance
of philosophy.
I have grown in my need for
knowledge as I have grown in
my desire to feed God’s people
through my preaching and
ministry.
By around the age of 16, I
had already begun to take the
notion of priesthood seriously.
I dreamt of being as good as
JERICHO
The Compassion of Jesus
Drug & Alcohol Rehabs., Refuge for Victims of Domestic
Violence, Supported Accommodation for the Destitute,
the Distressed, and all being ‘passed by on the other side.’
the priests I knew. I dreamt of
working in a parish, helping to
shape and animate it.
Through prayer and formation
in seminary, that dream
grew into an ambition which
was fulfilled on the day of ordination
and every day since
over the past 25 years.
Surprises
Every day, I get out of bed
to live my dream, to fulfil my
ambition, and to live as a
priest.
It has not all been magical.
There have been some terrible
mistakes and disasters.
Each new day has its own
surprises and excitement. But
my desire is the same.
I go about my work and
prayer hoping to be a good
shepherd, to encourage, lead
Archbishop Conti presents
Fr Campbell with a gift to
mark his Silver Jubilee
On 5 September, FR JOHN CAMPBELL celebrated his Silver Jubilee of
ordination to the priesthood with a Mass of Thanksgiving in St Paul’s,
Shettleston, where he has served for the past 22 years. Here he reflects on
how he understood and responded to the call to ministry and the graces he
derives from life as a priest
and feed, to protect, help and
guide.
And every night, as I do my
examine, I discover yet again
it’s our people who have encouraged,
fed, led, guided and
loved.
For the last 25 years, my life
has had meaning because I
have shared in Christ’s priesthood
– the priesthood of believers
through baptism, the
ministerial priesthood through
ordination. And, just as in
seminary, I’ve had a ball. I
have received so much more
than I have been able to give.
My dream is that the next
25 years and more will be just
as rewarding and enjoyable as
I continue to minister as a
priest, called to serve the community
of faith and build up
the body of Christ.
