WELCOME ARCHBISHOP PHILIP TARTAGLIA FLOURISH • 21
in Church’s revival in Glasgow
In their book of obituaries,
the Sisters paid glowing tribute
to the priest and bishop
who “earned for himself the
tender name ‘Father’ to the
then most friendless and desolate
daughters of St Francis.”
The obituary continued:
“With his great talents to support
the young institute, obstacles
which had hitherto
seemed insurmountable, now
disappeared. His purse was
ever open to their wants, and
his kind and feeling heart ever
ready to share their sorrows.”
And it added: “The memory
of Dr Smith will be ever held
dear by all who had the happiness
of sharing his friendship
or of knowing with what devoted
love and untiring care
he watched over this house
(the convent in Charlotte St)
and all its interests and the
many convent pupils who had
learned to love and revere the
holy bishop.”
Influence
By using the chalice that
Bishop Smith had gifted to the
Franciscan Sisters,
Archbishop Tartaglia was
making a visible and tangible
link with a period in the history
of the Church in Glasgow
which had a marked influence
on its subsequent growth.
1847, the year of Bishop
Smith’s consecration, was the
start of the great migration
brought on by famine in
Eucharistic Prayer using the chalice given
to Alexander Smith by Pope Pius IX
Ireland. By the time of his
death in 1861, the Catholic
population of Glasgow and
surrounding towns had mushroomed
– but the people still
faced great hardship and
poverty.
It was amid this rather harsh
social climate that various religious
congregations became
established in the city. After
the Franciscan Sisters, in the
space of the next decade,
came the Sisters of Mercy, the
Daughters of Charity,
Vincentians, Marists and
Jesuits. And, in 1862, a year
after Bishop Smith’s death,
the Little Sisters of the Poor
arrived.
The driving force behind all
of them was the desire to give
glory to God through loving
service of their neighbour as
teachers, nurses, carers and
spiritual guides.
And it was their participation
in the Eucharist, fed by
the body and blood of Christ,
which sustained them in very
trying circumstances – and
continues to satisfy the religious
sisters, brothers and
priests serving in the
