Golden day for St Barnabas’

church in Shettleston was

ordination took place in the
church 26 years ago.
The Archbishop paid tribute
to the parishioners who have
faithfully gathered daily and
weekly in the church and cared
for its upkeep, despite pressing
needs and hardships.
He said: “Over the last 50
years the people of St
Barnabas, have, like many in
this city, had to carry their share
of the cross.
“I don’t need to tell you of
the difficulties of modern living
– economic hardship; the
scourge of ill health which
seems to disproportionately afflict
the east end of this great
city; worries about our young

Geraldine’s bike triumph in Paris

AFTER cycling 300 miles
from London to Paris,
Geraldine McFaul felt as
elated as Tour de France
winner Bradley Wiggins
as she posed for pictures
in the shadow of the
Eiffel Tower.
The parishioner of St
Catherine Laboure,
Balornock, took on the “mad
cycle challenge” to raise funds
for Hope and Homes for
Children – a charity working
in Ukraine to get children out
of institutions into caring family
homes.
“I went beyond limits that I
never knew existed,” said
Geraldine, exhausted but exhilarated.
“Looking back, I still cannot
believe that I managed it –
that stubbornness I have was
in great demand, I tell you!”
Flourish highlighted
Geraldine’s fundraising efforts,
in June, when Ukraine
was playing host to the
European Football
Championships.
With widespread poverty
and the highest HIV infection
rate in Europe, more than
80,000 Ukranian children live
in orphanages and an estimated
25,000 children and
young adults are living on the
streets.
With money still coming in,
she has raised around £3200.
“I have been humbled and
delighted by the support and
sponsorship from so many of
you,” said Geraldine, who was
joined on the ride by another
100 cyclists fundraising for
various charities.
“Team Tortoise – a naturally
developed team of five –
were the tail end Charlie stars
of the show,” she added. “We
even managed to make lunch
on a couple of occasions when
there were still other people
there!
“However, the experience
of cycling through Paris with
100 other cyclists, taking over
the Arc de Triumph roundabout,
was incredible.”
While relieved to have completed
the journey, Geraldine
is happy to point out that her
