The Library is closed on all major holidays.<br />
Extensively renovated for two years<br />
and costing 13 million, the Congressman<br />
Frank J. Guarini Library re-opened in September<br />
1999. The Library’s collections and<br />
services have been developed to promote<br />
classroom teaching and to enable students<br />
to meet course requirements successfully.<br />
In addition, learning to locate, evaluate,<br />
and use information called Information<br />
Literacy, provides students with the skills<br />
necessary for lifelong learning.<br />
The library resources number approximately<br />
293,000 volumes, 1.8 million<br />
microforms, over 3,000 videos and other<br />
materials. There are over 200 reference<br />
e-books and over 3,000 other e-books.<br />
Over 104,000 complete, online or fulltext<br />
government documents may also be<br />
read though the OSCAR online catalog.<br />
To check out library materials, students<br />
must present a <strong>New</strong> <strong>Jersey</strong> <strong>City</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />
(NJCU) GothicNet identification card for<br />
the current academic semester to the staff<br />
at the Circulation Department. Faculty<br />
reserved books and articles, as well as copies<br />
of <strong>New</strong> <strong>Jersey</strong> <strong>City</strong> <strong>University</strong> master”s<br />
theses, can also be requested at the Circulation<br />
Desk. Inquiries should be directed<br />
to 201-200-3030.<br />
The Reference Department offers<br />
numerous encyclopedias, dictionaries,<br />
handbooks, bibliographies, directories,<br />
periodical indexes, and abstracts, in print<br />
or electronic format. Students are encouraged<br />
to call the Reference Department at<br />
201-200-3033 for advice on accessing the<br />
online catalog OSCAR (Online System<br />
<strong>Catalog</strong> for Academic Reference), and over<br />
150 electronic databases, as well as for<br />
compiling a bibliography, or instruction<br />
on any research or other topic.<br />
The library provides, through the Reference<br />
Department, Information Literacy/<br />
bibliographic instruction using library<br />
resources in the state-of-the-art John Victor<br />
Machuga Technology Center on the<br />
first floor. An e-mail reference service is<br />
available by using libraryref@njcu.edu, as<br />
well as ASK A LIBRARIAN, In Person/<br />
By Phone/By E-mail/Texting. On the<br />

The Periodicals and U.S. Government<br />
Documents Department currently<br />
subscribes to print and online journals.<br />
Inquiries regarding periodicals should be<br />
directed to 201-200-3518, and for U.S.<br />
Government Documents, calls should be<br />
directed to 201-200-3137.<br />
Education Services, includes curriculum<br />
materials on the fourth floor such as<br />
courses of study, elementary and secondary<br />
textbooks, juvenile encyclopedias, and<br />
other teacher education materials as well as<br />
juvenile fiction on the third floor. Inquiries<br />
about Educational Services should be<br />
directed to 201-200-3471.<br />
The library Is technology-based, user<br />
friendly, and aesthetically appealing. Each<br />
floor has carrels wired for Internet access<br />
via personal laptop computers. There is<br />
wireless access on all floors for students.<br />
Numerous computers are strategically<br />
located on each floor and all have the same<br />
menu access to the automated catalog,<br />
periodical holdings, electronic indices,<br />
full-text databases, Internet, etc. Databases<br />
are accessible to students from outside the<br />
library through the library home page,<br />
actually from anywhere in the world.<br />
Students can borrow from the library and<br />
access databases off campus using their<br />
GothicNet I.D. numbers. These databases<br />
which are updated continuously are accessible<br />
in campus and in the library without<br />
using Gothic ID numbers. Printed, phone,<br />
and online instructions are also available at<br />
the library.<br />
The Circulation and Reference desks<br />
are located on the main floor, along with<br />
the Library Information KIOSK and the<br />
Machuga Technology Center. The second<br />
floor has periodicals, government documents,<br />
Education Services, and media<br />
services. The third and fourth floors<br />
contain the circulating collections and the<br />
education services collections, library administration,<br />
and technical services. Each<br />
floor provides study carrels, study tables,<br />
and comfortable reading areas.<br />
CO-OP RESIDENCE HALL AND 2040<br />
UNIVERSITY APARTMENTS<br />
Co-Op Hall houses approximately 100<br />
students. The most modern of the three<br />
residence buildings, Co-Op Hall is a traditional<br />
corridor-style student residence with<br />
double-occupancy rooms, kitchens, laundry,<br />
bathrooms, and study and social lounges<br />
for freshmen and some transfers. The 2040<br />
<strong>University</strong> Apartments accommodates approximately<br />
57 upper level students 21 years<br />
of age and above within apartment-style<br />
suites. The building has adjacent parking, 24<br />
hour security, social lounge, computer lab,<br />
and a laundry facility.<br />
EDUCATION AND PROFESSIONAL<br />
STUDIES BUILDING<br />
Opened in 1994, the Education and Professional<br />
Studies Building, houses the Office<br />
of the Dean of the College of Professional<br />
Studies, the Office of the Dean of<br />
the Deborah Cannon Partridge Wolfe College<br />
of Education, the Electronic Learning<br />
Laboratory, and the Office for Teacher<br />
Preparation and Partnerships. There are<br />
also classrooms, as well as the departmental<br />
and faculty offices for the Departments of<br />
Business Administration, Criminal Justice,<br />
Early Childhood Education, Elementary<br />
and Secondary Education, Fire Science,<br />
Health Sciences, Literacy Education, The<br />
Multicultural Center, Office of Specialized<br />
Services for Students with Disabilities, and<br />
Special Education. The Department of<br />
Educational Leadership and Counseling,<br />
although a graduate academic department<br />
that reports to the Dean of the College of<br />
Education, is located separately in Rossey<br />
Hall.<br />
