GRADUATE STUDENT ADVISEMENT<br />

Students admitted as non-matriculated<br />

(conditional) degree-seeking, certification/<br />

certificate and/or for courses only should<br />

contact the academic department offering<br />

the courses in their respective areas of<br />

interest for advisement.<br />

When a student is formally admitted to<br />

a degree program (matriculated), a faculty<br />

advisor is appointed to the student by the<br />

Office of <strong>Graduate</strong> Studies (as per selection<br />

by the <strong>Graduate</strong> Coordinator of the<br />

student’s degree program).<br />

The faculty advisor has the following<br />

responsibilities:<br />

1. Assist students in the selection of<br />

courses within the framework of course<br />

and credit requirements that will meet<br />

their needs and interests.<br />

2. Approve all course selections and recommend<br />

substitutions or waivers, if any.<br />

All changes must be approved by the<br />

Dean of <strong>Graduate</strong> Studies and Continuing<br />

Education.<br />

3. Certify to the appropriate department<br />

chairperson that the candidate has met<br />

all requirements for graduation.<br />

4. Refer to the appropriate department<br />

chairperson any questions regarding the<br />

curriculum and policies of the department’s<br />

graduate program.<br />

The Office of Academic Services for<br />

Evening Students (OASES) serves as the<br />

evening administrative office and provides<br />

evening students and full-time and adjunct<br />

faculty a centrally located resource center.<br />

The office assists students in accessing<br />

academic support services, provides access<br />

to general <strong>University</strong> information, makes<br />

available various administrative forms,<br />

and coordinates telephone inquiries to the<br />

<strong>University</strong> after 4:30 p.m. In an effort to<br />

respond to the changing needs of evening<br />

students, OASES relates the concerns of<br />

evening students to the appropriate managerial<br />

administrator.<br />

The office hours above are subject to<br />

change in response to the needs of evening<br />

students. Please contact OASES to confirm<br />

hours of availability or for further information.<br />

The Office of Continuing Education<br />

in the Office of <strong>Graduate</strong> Studies and<br />

Continuing Education provides non-credit<br />

courses and workshops for adults and children.<br />

Non-credit courses for adults include<br />

courses in computer applications, web<br />

development and design, sign language,<br />

test preparation and other topics. In addition,<br />

non-credit course sequences leading<br />

toward professional certification and/or<br />

licensure are offered. These include courses<br />

leading toward certification in alcohol and<br />

drug counseling and real estate. The Office<br />

of Continuing Education also creates<br />

opportunities for the auditing of NJCU<br />

undergraduate courses (especially in ESL<br />

and modern languages), and administers<br />

various off-campus locations for both<br />

credit and non-credit courses.<br />

Through its “Kids on Campus” program,<br />

the Office provides educational and<br />

enrichment opportunities for children<br />

in grade kindergarten through grade 8.<br />

Offerings for children include courses in<br />

computers, creative arts, math, reading,<br />

science, Spanish enrichment, swimming,<br />

and courses geared toward preparation for<br />

various standardized tests.<br />

Several non-credit workshops for K-12<br />

educators are offered through our Professional<br />

Development Institute for Educators<br />

(PDIE). These workshops are offered<br />

on campus, off campus, and online.<br />

The Office of Continuing Education is<br />

registered with the <strong>New</strong> <strong>Jersey</strong> Department<br />

of Education as a <strong>New</strong> <strong>Jersey</strong> professional<br />

development provider.<br />

The Office of Continuing Education<br />
