Farewell to the first<br />
<strong>IAESTE</strong> Ombudsman,<br />

The <strong>IAESTE</strong> Ombudsman,<br />
Mr Nicholas Leonard<br />
presented his final report to<br />
the Conference and was<br />
thanked for his impartiality<br />
and commitment to the<br />
position. The Members<br />
decided to continue the post<br />
of Ombudsman for a period<br />
of three years and Professor<br />
Bernardo Herold, former<br />
National Secretary, <strong>IAESTE</strong><br />
Portugal was elected.<br />
As required under the <strong>IAESTE</strong> statutes, Günter<br />
Müller-Graetschel, National Secretary, <strong>IAESTE</strong><br />
Germany, retired as a member of the Advisory<br />
Committee, having completed his term of<br />
office. The General Conference elected Mr<br />
Lucien Seywert, National Secretary, <strong>IAESTE</strong><br />
Luxembourg to the vacant position for the<br />
period 2005-2008. Mr Uroš Kovšca, <strong>IAESTE</strong><br />
Slovenia, was elected to the Advisory<br />
Committee for 2005 replacing Ms Gabriella<br />
Rácz who was thanked for her excellent<br />
contribution to the Advisory Committee during<br />
2004.<br />
Following the decision of the Members at the<br />
56th <strong>Annual</strong> Conference, held in Vienna,<br />
Austria, January 2004, to establish <strong>IAESTE</strong><br />
Association sans but lucratif, at the next<br />
Conference in Cartagena de Indias, the former<br />
<strong>IAESTE</strong> ad hoc Association was dissolved<br />
according to Article 8(a) of the <strong>IAESTE</strong> ad hoc<br />
statutes.<br />
55 Full Founding Members and 8 Associate<br />
Members were accepted into the new <strong>IAESTE</strong><br />
A.s.b.l. which will be registered in Luxembourg.<br />
The Members of the new Board then elected Mr<br />
Lucien Seywert, National Secretary, <strong>IAESTE</strong><br />
Luxembourg, as the first President of <strong>IAESTE</strong><br />
A.s.b.l. who will Chair the next <strong>Annual</strong><br />
Conference in Malta.<br />
The Members then elected Portugal as the host<br />
venue for the 59th <strong>Annual</strong> Conference to be<br />
held from 20-26 January 2007.<br />
<strong>IAESTE</strong> Colombia provided a range of social<br />
events during the Conference which included<br />
visits to the restaurants “El Baluarte” and “El<br />
Mirador de las Animas”. The farewell dinner<br />
was held in the magnificent Santa Clara Hotel<br />
which was attended by the Minister of<br />
Education for Colombia, Cecilia Maria Vélez<br />
White. It was a celebration of a very well<br />
organised conference and an opportunity to<br />
recognise the contribution made to the<br />
Association by several people. The General<br />
Secretary made presentations to outgoing<br />
Advisory Committee members Günter Müller-<br />
Graetschel and Gabriella Rácz, the former<br />
Ombudsman Mr Nicholas Leonard and<br />
surprised the new Ombudsman, Professor<br />
Bernardo Herold with the highest honour<br />
available to <strong>IAESTE</strong>, the International Award.<br />
Our host, Dr Leonidas Lopez then made<br />
presentations to several people and thanked the<br />
Chair of the Conference, Mr Goran Radnović<br />
who had the distinct honour of presiding over<br />
the final sessions of <strong>IAESTE</strong> ad hoc. A special<br />
plaque, mounted on a piece of the old walls of<br />
Cartagena de Indias was presented to <strong>IAESTE</strong>,<br />
by the Universidad Tecnológica de Bolivar to<br />
commemorate the 57th <strong>IAESTE</strong> <strong>Annual</strong><br />
Conference, hosted in Colombia. The President,<br />
Mr Lucien Seywert then thanked the sponsors<br />
and the hotel management and staff who had<br />
helped make the Conference such a success.<br />
The General Secretary, Pauline Ferguson, then<br />
thanked <strong>IAESTE</strong> Colombia for their excellent<br />
organisation, hospitality and friendship during<br />
the Conference with special thanks to Dr<br />
Leonidas Lopez, Professor Bernard Baeyens and<br />
all the members of the organising Committee<br />
and Thomas Faltner for whom nothing was too<br />
much trouble.<br />
