Seminar on IAESTE Development
The Anniversary Cake
20th Seminar on IAESTE Development,
Ljubljana, Slovenia, 21-24 April, 2005
IAESTE International convened its 20th
Seminar on IAESTE Development on 21-24
April, 2005 in Ljubljana, Slovenia. This marked
the first Seminar held by the newly formed
IAESTE Association sans but lucratif.
SID serves as a means to bring together IAESTE
Member countries to discuss issues of best
practices, administration, organisational
advancement and development. Unlike the
Annual Conference, which focuses on the
exchange of internships, SID brings delegates
from Member countries together and focuses
on the development and improvement of
IAESTE as an international organisation.
Member countries form work groups and work
on specific tasks requested by the General
Conference sessions from the previous January.
The resulting work from the work groups are
refined over the year into recommendations
that go back to the IAESTE Board and then to
the General Conference for official voting and
implementation.
The conference kicked off at the Thursday
evening welcome reception that took place at a
local restaurant in the heart of Ljubljana.
Traditional Slovenian food and entertainment
were featured. Participants
were welcomed by Uroš
Kovšca, the Organising
Committee President of
IAESTE Slovenia. Further
remarks were made by Jeff
Lange, IAESTE United States
and SID Co-ordinator.
This year, 73 delegates were
in attendance from 25
countries worldwide including 17 National
Secretaries. The work at SID is broken down
into four working groups led by work group
Co-ordinators. The pace of the SID is extremely
fast. The meeting takes place over four days and
is results oriented. The Seminar convenes an
opening plenary to discuss work done since the
last SID and the work to be tackled by this
year’s SID. Work groups present their results at
a group fair held on Saturday. The group fair is
a poster session that allows work groups to post
their results and gather feedback from those
participants outside the work group. Groups
then present their findings and results to the
closing plenary where the next SID Coordinator
and venue for the 2007 SID is also
nominated.
However, SID is not only work. Conference
attendees spend time learning about the culture
of their host country and get to see some sights
too. On Friday evening, participants were
invited to a Slovenian castle for a Gala Dinner
attended by the Deputy Mayor of Ljubljana.
On Saturday, we were treated to a tour of
historical Ljubljana. SID attendees also get a
chance to share their own culture at the
National Evening. This evening provides
Member countries with the opportunity to
share food and drink from their own country
along with cultural dress and dances.
The 20th SID was an overwhelming success.
Participants left with a sense of satisfaction
from a job well-done and a better
understanding of IAESTE Slovenia and its
culture. A special thank you to IAESTE Slovenia
for their hard work in putting together this
year’s SID and the various sponsors for
providing the support necessary to host such a
successful event.
