IAESTE
International Award Recipients
Dr Norman Kerr
Dr Norman Kerr, former Chairman of IAESTE
Canada was honoured by IAESTE in January
2005 when he was given the IAESTE
International Award for his longstanding
commitment to the work of IAESTE in Canada.
A former Professor of Mechanical Engineering
at Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario, Dr
Kerr was responsible for the IAESTE programme
in Canada from 1972-1999 when he retired to
Victoria Island.
He was elected as a Member of the Advisory
Committee for a period of three years from
1975-78 and was Chairman of the 32nd Annual
Conference, held in Trondheim, Norway.
IAESTE would like to thank Dr Kerr for all his
hard work developing IAESTE in Canada and
wishes him and his wife Irene a long and
rewarding retirement in British Columbia.
Professor Bernardo Herold
In January 2005, it was with great pleasure that
the General Secretary, at the Farewell Dinner in
Cartagena de Indias, presented Professor
Bernardo Herold with the IAESTE International
Award which had been approved by the
Advisory Committee at their summer meeting
in 2004.
Professor Herold’s involvement in IAESTE is
legendary, having held most positions within
the organisation. He was National Secretary of
IAESTE Portugal from 1965-2003, General
Secretary of IAESTE from 1986-1990 and is
currently the newly elected IAESTE
Ombudsman.
We wish him and his wife Ursula all the best
for the future and thank him for all that he did
for students in Portugal and for his work at
International level.
Mr Eitan Yavin
Mr Eitan Yavin is seen on the left being
presented with the IAESTE International Award
by Professor Yoram Zimmel, President of IAESTE
Israel. Eitan Yavin was National Secretary of
IAESTE Israel from 1976 -1999 and in that
period worked tirelessly for his own students
and for those who came to his country on
placement. He was honoured to be a Member of
the Advisory Committee for a period of 2 years
at the end of his term of office.
Mr Tobias Wittmann
Tobias Wittmann first came into contact with
IAESTE in 1989 when he was studying Electrical
Engineering at Friedrich Alexander Universität
Erlangen-Nürnberg, Germany. One year later he
founded the Local Committee in Erlangen with
25 members and was President from 1990-1993.
Following his first traineeship in Oslo, Norway
at AS Oslo Sporveier, Tobias was elected as SID
(Seminar for IAESTE Development) Coordinator
in 1994 and was re elected in 1996.
After much discussion it was decided to
establish an Alumni Network for IAESTE and so
it was that during the General Conference in
Copenhagen, Denmark, January 1996 that
Tobias Wittmann became the first Friends of
IAESTE Co-ordinator.
Tobias worked very hard for 8 years building up
the Friends of IAESTE network, FoIN and when
he resigned from his post due to work and
family commitments in 2004 we were sorry to
lose such a faithful and dedicated supporter of
IAESTE.
It was therefore with great pleasure that the
General Secretary, on a visit to Munich last
August, was able to present him with the
highest honour, the International IAESTE
Award, as an acknowledgement of his
contribution to the work of IAESTE throughout
the world.
