Reports on the various Anniversaries occurring throughout the IAESTE World
Greetings from IAESTE Turkey
on our Golden Anniversary
I am delighted to announce that IAESTE Turkey
is celebrating its Golden Anniversary this year,
my first year in the IAESTE family. Due to our
previous National Secretary Prof. Dr. A.Fuat
Cakır’s retirement, I was appointed as the
IAESTE National Secretary of Turkey by the
Rector of Istanbul Technical University from
December 1st 2004.
IAESTE Turkey joined the Association in 1953
and became a Full Member in 1955 with
Istanbul Technical University (ITU) as the
supporting organisation. Thus, for more than
50 years, Turkey has had the opportunity of
sending approximately 12,398 students for
technical training to different countries and
received about 7423 students through the
IAESTE organisation with the help of 182
different Companies and 36 participating
Universities. This international experience
surely helps the students to broaden their
outlook on scientific and cultural activities thus
contributing to their future professions as well.
IAESTE Turkey was registered as one of the
Founding Members of the new Association
IAESTE A.s.b.l. during the Annual Conference
2005 which was held in Colombia.
We succeeded in exchanging 232 placements
with 45 different countries, putting us in the
top five countries at this year’s exchange
sessions, in Cartagena. Every year, the number
of students being exchanged is increasing with
the help of student
Committees, supporting
companies and the tireless
efforts of our staff.
This summer, in July, our
local student clubs in
Istanbul are organising a
‘Get Together’ Meeting at
ITU in Istanbul to celebrate
our 50th anniversary The
activity is called ‘Come and
Enjoy Turkey’ and will bring together new and
former IAESTE trainees who will join many
different social activities including various
sight-seeing tours in Istanbul, one of the most
beautiful cities in the world. I am sure
everybody will have a great time at this
international meeting.
Finally, as a brand new IAESTE National
Secretary, and as a former IAESTE trainee from
the 1970’s, I would like to express our sincere
gratitude to all of the IAESTE friends for all
their kind support during the past 50 years. I
am very happy to be involved in such a nice
organisation and to have the opportunity of
meeting with the warm IAESTE family. I have
no doubt that IAESTE Turkey will continue to
engage in and contribute to all IAESTE activities
with its maximum effort in future years, with
the help of our participating academic
Institutions and their student clubs.

IAESTE Turkey
The National Committee in Syria was
established in 1965 after much discussion
among Professors from Aleppo University who
suggested participating in this great
Association. Once agreement had been given by
the Ministry of Higher Education, Syria became
a Member of IAESTE.
The National office is situated in Aleppo
University with local offices in Damascus
Lattakia and Homs. During the first years only
a few students were sent and received but later
statistics showed an increase in the number of
countries IAESTE Syria exchanged with. Since
1965 IAESTE Syria has sent 1629 students
abroad and received 1255. Today 4 Universities
are involved in the programme, Damascus,
Aleppo, Baath and Tishreen.
We organise a reception programme for
incoming students and during the training
period they can enjoy the seaside, nature and
ancient ruins in most parts of Syria.
Syria is proud to be a Member of IAESTE as we
believe that our students learn a lot of useful
experiences in a different, advanced
environment and on the other hand foreign
students coming to Syria learn about our
culture and people. IAESTE Syria hopes to
develop further and to continue to serve the
aims of IAESTE in the future.
