In early February, 2012, the 10th Asia-Pacific Microscopy Conference (APMC 10), the 2012
International Conference on Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICONN 2012) and the 22 nd
Australian Conference on Microscopy and Microanalysis (ACMM 22) will be held in Perth,
Western Australia, as a single, integrated event.
The Conference will include pre-event Short Courses, Workshops and a concurrent major
Equipment Exhibition, at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre. The combined event will
be the largest microscopy and nanotechnology-related event in Australia’s history. Over 1,500
delegates from more than 30 nations are expected to provide a unique and exciting forum.
The Conference is being conducted under the auspices of the Council of Asia-Pacific Societies
for Microscopy (CAPSM), The Australian Research Council Nanotechnology Network (ARCNN)
and the Australian Microscopy and Microanalysis Society Inc (AMMS).
The Conference is dedicated to the memory of David Cockayne FRS ( 1942-2011).

The Nanoscience and Nanotechnology promise has been
around for some time. In the 21st century, researchers
are working on technologies to achieve these exact goals!
The prospect of injecting patients with machines to make
repairs, of creating super-strong and light materials for
space exploration, of restoring environmental systems
on a molecular level are all part of the promise of
Nanotechnology. Most importantly, unlike so many other
fields, Nanotechnology is delivering.
ICONN 2012 will bring together national and international
researchers, industry, students and early career scientists to
present the latest in the truly multidisciplinary research fields
covering nine symposia from the nanosafety, regulatory and
ethics of nanotechnology, nano materials, devices, systems
and industry applications.
We have already attracted a number of outstanding
international plenary speakers and will hold a number of
short courses in a number of areas related to nanoscience
and nanotechnology.
Microscopy and microanalysis are sciences that progress
rapidly through innovative applications and technological
advances by very smart people. We are proud that many of
these people, have accepted our invitation to be a part of this
conference in Perth.
The Asia-Pacific Microscopy Conference is a four yearly
flagship event run by The Committee of Asia-Pacific
Societies for Electron Microscopy (CAPSEM). CAPSEM
started in 1984 under the auspices of the International
Federation of Societies for Microscopy (IFSM), of which
it is a regional member. CAPSM was founded to foster
the development of all aspects of electron microscopy by
supporting existing activities and stimulating new ones.
CAPSM also assists individual researchers and regional
research groups in meeting their needs such as technical
staff training, while facilitating the interchange of information
from past meetings.
In 2008 the CAPSM Council voted to combine the APMC-
10 with the 22 nd Australian Conference on Microscopy and
Microanalysis, the first time for an APMC in Australia. A
further opportunity arose to integrate with the ICONN 2012,
resulting in the largest microscopy and nanotechnology event
ever to be held in Australia.
The 2012 Conference will present the latest developments in
the instrumentation, specimen preparation and integration of
microscopy and microanalysis of different areas of physical
and biological sciences.
