Influence cognitive ability i.e. affects thought processes and
behaviour.
A group of illnesses which disrupt the functioning of the brain so
much so that a person is unable to distinguish what is real.
Verbal interactions which use fear to change a person’s
behaviour such as intimidating language, yelling, or abusive
language.
Strategies which need to be actioned quickly and can include
immediate responses, anger management or crisis response.
The use of physical barriers such as locks or padlocks, increased
supervision, or boundaries in an environment in order to restrict a
person’s access.
Practices that use seclusion, procedures, restraints and
programs that prevent a person exercising choice and selfdetermination.
A formal authorisation to ensure that the use of any restricted
practice is clinically justifiable and can be safely implemented
within policy and practice requirements. This authorisation is
formal, conditional and time-limited.
The placement of a person in isolation for a specified time in an
environment from which they cannot leave, usually as a crisis
response.
Hearing impairment, visual impairment or both.
A type of Individual Plan which must be developed in conjunction
with the client so the plan remains client-focused, as well as
involving the client’s family, primary carers and other significant
