Brackishwater aquaculture has ken
identified as one of the high potential area
for increasing fish and shellfish pr~duction

the Indian Cnuncil of Agricultural Research
sanctioned the cstablishmenl of the ('cntr;tl
Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculturc during
the 7th Plan period with effect from
1.4.1985, by reorganisation of the then existing
Fisheries Research Institutes of the
C~)uncil. The Institutc started functioning
independently since April 1987. The Ileadquarters
of the Institutc is located in Madras
City with field and farm facilities at Muttukadu,
about 30 km south of Madras. The
Institutc has three Rescarch Centres located
at Kskdwip (West &ngal). Puri (Oriwi) and
Nitrakkal (Kerala).
Mandate
The lnstitute has the following m;rn

Infmtmctum development
The fish hrtw>dst(rk holding tanks at
Muttukadu with a total seawater holdingcapacily
of 500 t havc hecn completed. Ihe
shrimp hatchery complex at Muttukndu is
nearing completion. 7'hc fish hatchery and
feed mill at Muttukadu arc under construction.
Reconstruction work relating to "A" series
yx~nds at Muttukadu is also in propcss.
