There’s no turning back as automakers<br />

drive toward electrification<br />

The auto industry, worldwide, is<br />

charging full speed ahead toward the<br />

electrification of the automobile.<br />

Draconian fuel-economy regulations<br />

that will keep tightening from now until at<br />

least 2025 all but ensure that electrically<br />

driven vehicles will become a significant<br />

part of the product mix in Canada and the<br />

United States, as well as overseas.<br />

Some of those vehicles will be<br />

conventional hybrids, with which we have<br />

become familiar over the past decade.<br />

But, increasingly, they will be plug-in<br />

hybrids (PHEVs) or battery-electric<br />

vehicles (BEVs). And what makes those<br />

vehicles different from anything we’ve<br />

seen before, in any significant volume,<br />

is that they’ll all need charging from the<br />

electrical grid. A lot of charging.<br />

Which means there’s going to be a real<br />

surge in the need for the installation of<br />

dedicated chargers or, at the very least,<br />

high-voltage circuits. And that need<br />

means new opportunities for electrical<br />

suppliers and contractors at all levels, and<br />

to a multiplicity of customers.<br />

Volt and Leaf are the vanguard<br />

Two highly publicized new vehicles<br />

arriving on the Canadian scene this fall<br />

are at the cutting-edge of this change in<br />

direction. And they preview the type of<br />

infrastructure expansion that will become<br />

necessary over the next decade.<br />

General Motors calls its Chevrolet<br />

Volt an “extended range electric vehicle”<br />

(EREV). In pure technical terms, it is a<br />

series hybrid, in which a small gasoline<br />

engine is used to drive a generator to<br />

keep its batteries charged and power its<br />

electric motor, until the gas tank runs<br />

dry—just like a normal car.<br />

But the batteries can also be charged<br />

by plugging into the grid. Enough so<br />

that the Volt can be driven up to 56 km,<br />

depending on operating conditions, on<br />

battery power alone, before the gasoline<br />

engine ever kicks in. It is possible, then,<br />

that someone commuting less than 56<br />

km/day, round-trip, would never use any
