The Nourishing Spirit of Nectar Gene Baldwin Floral nectar begins flowing in the spring and continues through summer. Nectar travels through the air as a “scent of the Divine”, an olfactory realization of beauty that draws visitors to its inherent nourishment. Nectar thus solicits its own consumption, linking the nourished visitor to the plant’s cycle of life and to Life itself. Yet it is the everflowing nectar of Spirit that awakens and nourishes the soul throughout all seasons of life. As a manifestation of divine beauty, the flower serves a regenerative role in nature. When fertilized, it transforms into fruit that bears the seeds of generations yet to be. But were it not for the visitors drawn by its fragrant and uniquely nourishing nectar, the blossom’s beauty would die along with it. But Nature nourishes and perpetuates her own beauty. From the pollinated blossom develops fruit, itself a manifestation of gustatory beauty -- sweetness of taste. Prized by those who seek its nourishment, the fruit serves as a vehicle to the seed, ensuring the plant’s wide distribution while nourishing the transportation in return. Like the nectar preceding it, the fruit invites its own consumption, but for the benefit of its seeds and their inherent purpose. We prize the fruit, but we treasure the seed. The seed embodies the miracles and wisdom of life itself. It is both planted and eaten, nourishing in the “now” as well as in the future. When conditions are right, the seed unfolds, connecting soil to sun, water to air. It matures unto itself, manifesting its potential along the grand continuum of life. The increasing availability and intensity of sunlight, along with water pulsed by the moon, draws forth the flower and the nectar, the fruit and the seed. The nectar attracts and nourishes the visitors necessary for the plant to reproduce. The visitor thus becomes part of the cyclical renewal of life, enabling the multiplication of the plant and its integration among myriad other life forms. Genetic coding is exchanged and pooled, and future generations become more likely to materialize and thrive. This process of continuity and nourishment of form is analogous to our own metaphysical attraction and bonding. The Tree of Life blooms in due season, drawing seekers to its nectar. Nourished by the Spirit of Nectar, we bond and encode wisdom, becoming both flower and seed. Nature nourishes her own. And as we are drawn by the scent of the garden, we find ourselves nourished along the way. Thus led into the garden, we see there is much work to be done. Indeed, we are drawn here for that purpose -- to become the gardeners and the caretakers of seeds yet unplanted, of generations yet to be. At Nectar Ridge Retreat, we come together to share, exchange and explore our spiritual perspectives. Nourished in the process, we bond and support the encoding of wisdom for souls yet unborn.
