in Milwaukee-area theatres despite storm
warnings and heavy rains. Sid Kaplan, head
of S-K Films, has booked the film in Chicago-area
theatres beginning September 22.
Meanwhile, a series of TV, radio and newspaper
plugs will announce the film's arrival
here.
new position of assistant film buyer/
booker for Wehrenberg Theatre Circuit
where his immediate superior is Woody
Cole. Phillips, whose appointment became
effective Monday (21), had been employed
as branch manager of American International
Pictures here since 1952 and until
his resignation to assume his new post. He
began his career in the motion picture industry
in 1941. Kemp Smith, salesman at
AIP for the past two years, has succeeded
Phillips as branch manager and at 22 is
perhaps the youngest exec in the company
but was raised in the industry, being the
son of Stanley Smith of Kemp Films who
was associated with Columbia Pictures before
opening the independent exchange.
"Revenge of the Pink Panther" is still
going strong at Mid-America's Esquire
where it realized the second-highest gross
in the country for a single theatre engagement
in its opening week. In a "Pink Panther"
promo sponsored by MAT and KPLR-
communicate by thought transference and
control objects by way of his crystal-studded
collar. Of a highly developed civilization,
he lands on earth when his spaceship is
disabled. His earthly friends are Sandy Duncan,
Ken Berry and McLean Stevenson,
scientists, who share his adventure and
in
help thwart his enemies Hans Conried and
Roddy McDowall. Zunar also has a romance
with Sandy's lady-cat Lucy Belle.
Recent visitors were former Filmrowites
C. Weber Howell, Universal branch manager
in Atlanta, Ga., and his wife Pauline,
both of whom were associated with Paramount
here. They were kept busy with relatives
and longtime friends in the industry
as St. Louis is "home" to Pauline. Weber's
associated with another former St. Louisan,
Thom Dunn, who was sales manager for
Universal here before becoming their Southern
division manager. Pauline, who was in
the industry in Atlanta briefly, is now a
housewife, busy with teen-ager Linda,
nineyear-old
Kim and the six-year-old twins
Nicole and Charles Weber jr.
Former TV newscaster Bob Chase is the
Republican nominee for the 2nd District
seat in Congress, having won the recent
primary, but almost ran into trouble when
the license plate on his campaign van was
reported missing. It seems the license clerk
who waited on Chase when he registered
his van and secured license plates became
a bit excited upon recognizing Chase and
gave him all the copies of the transaction
so there was no record in Jefferson City
and the plates were reported missing. All's
well now!
Kenneth Mars, who appeared in Mel
Brooks' "Young Frankenstein" and "Silent
Movie," is portraying Captain Hook in the
Muny Opera production "Peter Pan" which
concludes the season with the final performance
Sunday (27). Tovah Feldshuh, who
plays the leading role in the Barrie classic,
will be the guest speaker at the St. Louis
chapter of Hadassah luncheon meeting
INDIANAPOLIS
^ariety Club officers and members met
Tuesday (8) to finalize plans for the
annual golf tournament to be held at the
Indianapolis Country Club Thursday (24).
This was the site of the LPGA tournament,
held in this city, which received national
TV coverage. All the ladies who participated
in the LPGA tournament at this country
club agreed that, while it was a beautiful
course and well cared for, it required a great
deal of accuracy and proper ball placement
or else the golfer would be in real trouble.
Reservations for the Variety Club tournament
are arriving in larger numbers than in
previous years and a large turnout is expected.
Theatre Owners of Indiana convention
chairman Tom Ferree, owner of Heaston
Theatres of this city, held a meeting with his
convention committee Tuesday (8) to make
further plans for the fall conclave, to be
held October 31 -November 1 at the Marriott
Inn in this city. Registration is open to
all who wish to attend and registrations are
now being received. For further information,
contact Theatre Owners of Indiana,
telephone (317) 634-1130. Address inquiries
to Mrs. Ann Craft, executive secretary of
the TOl. Tom Ferree at his meeting explored
several new and innovative ideas with
his committee for the convention agenda
and the program appears to have something
for distributors as well as for exhibitors and
suppliers. Indications are that the program
will exceed last year's in many ways—and
last year's program will be hard to beat!
Universal's "National Lampoon's Animal
House" opened here Friday (18) at the
Casllcton Square, Lafayette Square and Regency
theatres. "Animal House" is the recreation
of a "typical" pledge week at the
Delta fraternity house during the early
1960s. The film is a nostalgic comedy of
life as it was on campus, a picture in which
you will see people you recognize and characters
with whom you went to school.
